LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball fell at Jackie Robinson Stadium to UCLA, 11-4, Tuesday night snapping a seven-game win streak the 'Eaters had against the Bruins.
- UCI was in a hole from the beginning allowing five first-inning runs on the back of two-run and three-run home runs trailing, 5-0.
- The Bruins led by as much as 10-0 with a run in the third and a four-run fifth helped by four free passes via walk or hit by pitch.
- The Anteater offense got a jolt in the sixth inning loading the bases and putting three across starting off with a Jacob McCombs two-run single and followed by Landon Gaz's bases loaded walk
- The bats struggled to capitalize further leaving bases loaded in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings without adding any more to the scoreboard.
- Seven Anteater pitchers came together Tuesday night with starter Ryan Kysar bearing the brunt of the Bruin attack drawing the loss from the five-run first inning.
- Second-year Andrew Grove highlighted the night in his collegiate debut shutting out UCLA in the sixth and seventh innings while picking up his first two career strikeouts
- Landon Gaz had a solid evening off the bench reaching base all three times and driving in two including a ninth-inning RBI single
UC Irvine's focus shifts back to Big West play as they head to Northridge for a three-game series at CSUN starting Friday, March 14 with first pitch at 5:30 p.m.
Postgame Thoughts from head coach Ben Orloff
"Game like tonight was a lot like Friday - when you walk or hit 12 and don't play good defense, you can't win."
"Grove and Gaz were the two guys we singled out. Grove's worked his butt off after missing last year with an ACL, hasn't had an opportunity to pitch in a game this year. He comes into a game where we couldn't get anybody out and has a really good first inning and pretty good in the second, it was cool to see. Gaz comes in off the bench and takes good at-bats when we were starting to make a comeback and hit the ball hard, it was great to see those guys when they get their opportunities do well with them."
