No. 18 Anteaters Take Two in Doubleheader at CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball two both ends of Saturday's doubleheader over CSUN with wins of 11-3 and 15-2 at Robert J. Hiegert Field.

Game 1
  • The 'Eaters and Matadors were embroiled in a pitcher's duel early on with Riley Kelly and CSUN's Ryan Halamicek shutting out the other through three innings
  • UCI jumped on the board in the fourth with a leadoff home run by Jacob McCombs to make it 1-0
  • CSUN responded with the first three hitters on base and scoring to go ahead, 3-1
  • Anthony Martinez had his own response belting a double with two outs to score a pair and knot things up, 3-3
  • UCI would finish things off with the final 10 runs of the game led by Blake Penso who finished 4-for-4 punctuating things with a three-run home run in the eighth inning
  • Kelly made his first start of the season pitching into the fifth inning before Ricky Ojeda took over and shutout the Matadors for the final five innings picking up the win.
    • Ojeda swung the momentum in the fifth inning escaping without allowing a run despite having runners on second and third and nobody out striking out a pair and getting a lineout with the bases loaded to end the frame
Game 2
  • The second half of the doubleheader was Anteaters from the get-go as Colin Yeaman, who homered in his last at-bat of Game 1, put the 'Eaters up 2-0 just two batters into Game 2 with another HR
  • Yeaman's next at-bat was more of the same hitting another two-run home run in the second for his third consecutive at-bat with a home run and a 5-0 lead
  • UCI's lead was as large as 12-0 adding runs four in the fourth on the back of an Anthony Martinez three-run shot, and UCI hit back-to-back homers in the fifth from Zach Fjelstad and Rowan Felsch
  • UC Irvine handled business on the mound again with Trevor Hansen posting his second straight quality start scattering seven hits over six innings. He left a runner on base in five of the six innings he pitched walking just one and picking up three strikeouts
  • The offense needed just 12 hits to put up 15 runs
    • Yeaman's two-HR game was the first for the team this year as he drove in four
    • Martinez continues his run of an RBI in every game he's played this year with three in Game 2
    • Rowan Felsch scored all three times he reached base and added an RBI and a stolen base
    • Alonso Reyes had two hits, two runs, and two driven in as UCI's nine-spot in the order went 6-for-8 with six RBIs on the day
The 'Eaters have wrapped up the series and has a chance for a sweep Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch with both starting pitchers to be determined
