Baker, Demirbas Lead Anteaters at Vince O'Boyle Classic

IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's track & field team wrapped up action at the Vince O'Boyle Classic with more impressive performances Saturday at Anteater Stadium.
 
Esmeray Demirbas won the 400m hurdles by over four seconds as she clocked a personal-record 58.88. Her time was a meet record and ranks third in school history. It was the fastest 400H race by an Anteater since 2012.
 
Nyla Baker took home the shot put title with a lifetime-best 15.48 meters (50-9.5). She reached the 15-meter mark on each of her last two throws with her PR coming on her sixth attempt. Baker moved up one spot to No. 3 in program history. Pinkie Schnayer was the runner-up at 14.09m (46-2.75), while Nadia Combs-Mahone took 10th (12.73m/41-9.25) in a field of 33 athletes.
 
Baker was also UCI's top finisher in the discus where she was third overall (45.39m/148-11). Combs-Mahone added a personal-best 44.83m (147-1) to place fourth.
 
Reyna Johnson clocked a lifetime-best 13.79 to finish second in the 100m hurdles. Her time ranks sixth among UC Irvine's all-time leaders. Jazzmine Davis (14.27) and Kailah McKenzie (14.38) were also among the top-five, and Lauren Thai contributed a personal-record 14.40.
 
Halle Sutherland notched a personal-best 24.29 to come in third out of 48 in the 200m. Samantha Bartz wasn't far behind in seventh as she ran a PR 24.57.
 
In the 400m, Ihe Okoh set a collegiate personal-best of 56.55 to place third overall. Amelia Trautman had a lifetime-best 57.43, while Tatiana Sprock registered a season-best 57.66.
 
Bartz crossed the 100m finish line in a personal-record 11.77 seconds for a top-three showing. Her time ranks seventh in school history.
 
Less than 24 hours after winning the 5000-meter at yesterday's Mangrum Invitational, Kaia Schmidt led the 'Eaters in the 800m with a time of 2:14.96. She was third out of 39. Makena Castillo also took fourth at 2:16.01, while Maggie Sczupak (2:17.68), Sophie Lopez (2:18.21) and Malia Leupold (2:19.00) were among the top-10.
 
Kailah McKenzie (1.66m/5-5.25) was fifth in the high jump. Jolie Robinson also cleared a season-best 1.56m (5-1.25). Jackie Acosta was a finalist in the triple jump, finishing seventh with a season-best 11.13m (36-6.25).
 
Stella Knobbe was eighth among 40 runners in the 1500m at 4:55.67.
 
Demirbas, Acosta, Sutherland and Malia Gay closed out the day with a third-place showing in the 4x400 relay (3:45.88).
 
UC Irvine will be back in action next weekend at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla (April 4-5).
