SAN JACINTO, Calif. – UC Irvine held off a charging UC Riverside to capture the UCR Soboba Classic at the Soboba Golf Course Sunday.
It is the second tournament win of the season for the Anteaters after also claiming the Wolverine Invitational in September. It is the first time since 2008-09 that the Anteaters have won a pair of titles in a single season.
UCI shot a 54-hole total of 880 (287-291-302), ending three shots ahead of the host Highlanders, who went one-under as a team on the final round and totaled a three-day score of 883 (299-297-287). UCR's 287 on the final round matched the Anteaters' first round for the tournament low.
Freshman
Alona Avery carded her lowest round of the tournament Sunday with a score of 71 and finished in third place with a 54-hole total of 217 (73-73-71). On the final round, she posted three birdies and an eagle on the Par 5 15
th hole. Avery led all players on Par 5s with a 4.42 (-7) scoring mark. For the tournament, Avery had eight birdies and 36 pars.
Sophomore
Alyson Sor moved up three spots to finish fifth with a score of 221 (71-76-74). She led all players with 15 birdies over the three days and led the field on Par 3s with a 3.20 (+11) average.
Freshman
Katherine Gerbing was tied for sixth with a score of 222 (73-73-76), while junior
Jasmine Chen was tied for 16
th with a 228 total (72-75-81). Chen was one of three Anteaters to record an eagle, all marking a three on the Par 5 15
th hole. Freshman
Katelyn Kong's final score was disqualified after she signed for an incorrect score, ending the tournament in 41
st place. Junior
Charlotte Ryoo played as an individual and was tied for 27
th with a three-day score of 238 (77-81-80).
The Anteaters lead the tournament field on Par 3 (3.20), Par 4 (4.21) and Par 5 (4.66) scoring. UCI was second in pars (157) and third in birdies (39).
Next, UC Irvine will head to the Grand Canyon Invitational Feb. 25-26.
