Anteaters End Morning Match in 2-2 Draw

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer battled through a chaotic early-morning match Wednesday at Cal State Bakersfield's Main Soccer Field to a 2-2 tie.

Best Part of Waking Up
  • For a second straight trip, the Anteaters headed to Cal State Bakersfield to play a match with a kickoff before lunch time, this Wednesday the sides got going at 10:30 a.m.
  • UCI started on the front foot with Agaton Pourshahidi getting the first shot away and on target. His second shot wouldn't miss
    • In the 15th minute, UCI was on the attack as Isaac Powell fed to Travis Babineau who connected with Pourshahidi near the top of the box who turned on his second touch and whipped a shot into the upper left corner putting the 'Eaters on top, 1-0
  • UCI continues its pursuit with three more shots from dangerous areas that were all blocked between the 22nd and 29th minutes
  • The Roadrunners made their march and put up the next five shots including three saved by Joe O'Shaughnessy in a three-minute span
Every Little Thing Counts
  • The second half was off to the races and Cal State Bakersfield went on the attack and found the equalizer 10 minutes in
    • After tracking all the way across goal, the Roadrunners came out on the right wing and shot a low cross in finding Jacob Bernauer who redirected a header in to tie things up, 1-1, in the 55th minute
  • The Anteaters were back in the offensive third search for another goal through the next 20 minutes and thought they had one in the 75th minute
    • Travis Babineau sent a ball near the six-yard box to a teammate which later popped out to Gage Lyons on the left wing to far across goal and in
    • Following the celebration, they saw the offside flag up negating the goal and leading to a video review
    • After a lengthy review of nearly 15 minutes, the offside call was upheld and play continued on with a 1-1 score
  • Video review was back in the 81st minute
    • An Anteater corner kick floated to the far post leading to a goal kick
    • A review was issued challenging a potential hand ball in the box by Cal State Bakersfield's defense
    • The review determined there was a hand ball and UCI earned a penalty kick opportunity
    • At the spot was freshman Zac Smuck who caught the CSUB keeper diving the other way as he slotted home the goal to get the lead back, 2-1
  • One final wrinkle to the match happened in the 87th minute
    • Isaac Powell fouled a Roadrunner on a promising attack at the midfield line along the left wing
    • Video review resurfaced for a third time in the final 15 minutes of the match and upgraded the yellow card given to a red card leaving UCI down to 10 men in the final 3:19
    • Cal State Bakersfield took advantage and did it just in time with a similar-looking goal to their first heading in a low cross under the bar with 10 seconds left on the game clock to end the match, 2-2
UC Irvine 2, Cal State Bakersfield 2
  • The hectic day-time, midweek match resulted in one point for UC Irvine just like their other two Big West matchups. The 'Eaters are now 0-0-3 on three points through three conference matches
    • The Anteaters are winless in their last six (0-3-3) now with a 5-3-4 record on the season
  • Agaton Pourshahidi earned a goal for a second straight match giving him three on the season and 16 in his career
  • Zac Smuck's second goal of the season and his career also gave UCI the lead and keeps UCI a perfect 4-for-4 from the spot this season
  • Anteater assists went to Travis Babineau, his second of the season, and Isaac Powell, his third to tie for the team lead
  • Joe O'Shaughnessy faced his the most shots on goal of the season facing seven and saving five, his most in an Anteater uniform
  • Notably, Gustavo Gonzalez returned to the pitch for his first minutes since going down early at San Diego, and he played the entirety of the second half
  • On the stat sheet, the Roadrunners held advantages in shots, 17-13, and more than doubled UCI in fouls, 20-8, with just two cards shown in the match
UC Irvine returns close to home playing on Cal State Fullerton on Saturday back to a 7:00 p.m. kickoff
