IRVINE, Calif. - No. 16 UC Irvine defeated Cal State Fullerton, 15-7, for their second Big West win of the season on Friday night at Titan Aquatics Center.
The 'Eaters and Titans traded goals to open up the first period leaving it tied up, 2-all, at the 4:49 mark. ??UCI outscored Cal State Fullerton 3-1 over the remainder of the first period to take a 5-3 lead. The Anteaters netted the first two of the second period to increase the lead, 7-3. The Titans found the back of the net before UCI scored the next two to widen the gap, 9-4. Cal State Fullerton netted the final two of the half to cut the lead, 9-6, at the horn. The 'Eaters outscored the Titans 6-1 in the second half, including a 5-0 run in the third period, to secure the 15-7 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS: Junior Johann Thrall led the 'Eaters with four goals. Junior Wyley Dale netted three for UCI and Sophomore Ethan Spoon added two tallies.
Cole Francisco added one goal and three assists for a four point performance. Alex Lopez, Samuel Otta, Jack Stevens, Samuel Bowman, and Tyler Laymon each netted one.
Zayd Mahmoud finished with 13 saves for the 'Eaters.
Ethan Ivey recorded seven saves for the Titans.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Titans got on the board first before Ethan Spoon found the equalizer with the man advantage at the 5:50 mark. Cal State Fullerton netted one on the power play before Spoon found the back of the net again to tie it up, 2-all, at the 4:49 mark. Johann Thrall added a tally at the 3:53 mark before Cole Francisco converted on a penalty shot to take the lead, 4-2, at the 3:21 mark. The Titans got one back before Wyley Dale netted the final goal of the period on the power play to increase the lead, 5-3.
Tyler Laymon opened up the scoring in the second period before Thrall found the back of the net to widen the gap, 7-3, at the 4:29 mark. The Titans capitalized on the man advantage before W. Dale converted on the penalty shot to maintain the lead, 8-4, at the 2:43 mark. Alex Lopez found the back of the net on the power play before the Titans netted the final two goals of the half to cut the lead, 9-6.
The 'Eaters shut out the Titans, 5-0, in the third period. Thrall kicked off the run on the power play at the 7:25 mark before Jack Stevens found the back of the net at the 6:08 mark to increase the lead, 11-6. Thrall converted on the man advantage for his fourth goal of the game before Samuel Otta netted one at the 2:24 mark. W. Dale found the back of the net on the power play with just 0:26 left to secure the hat trick and widen the gap, 14-6.
Samuel Bowman netted the first goal of the final frame on the power play to increase UCI's lead, 15-6, at the 5:31 mark. The Titans got one back at the 3:14 mark, but the 'Eaters held them to just one goal in the second half to secure the win, 15-7.
