Anteaters Top Sac State, 3-0

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer scored three goals to secure three points in the Big West race Saturday downing Sacramento State, 3-0, at Hornet Field

Fresh Finds
  • UC Irvine started strong with the first four shots of the match and six of the first eight in addition to the match's first three fouls, but everything flew off target keeping things scoreless
  • The 31st minute broke the seal as the 'Eaters charged upfield as a unit
    • Agaton Pourshahidi made a steal in the Sac State half and found Marcus Lee to start the attack. He fed a ball outside to Brady Treinen on the left wing whose first touch was a ball across the 18-yard box to Cristian Gallo who slid in and connected on a ball sending by the right post and in for a 1-0 lead
  • The 'Eaters were back at it 10 minutes later with another steal in the opponent's third
    • Isaiahs Gutierrez stepped in front of a pass and immediately looked upfield to Zac Smuck who beat his man and fired from a tough angle on the right side and inside the far post to double the lead, 2-0, in the 40th minute
Riding It Out
  • The second half began in Sac State's favor firing some early shots including a corner sent in that was headed on goal and grabbed by a leaping Joe O'Shaughnessy
  • UC Irvine's attack made its way back into the box and drew a penalty on a foul on Shane Kaemerle
    • Agaton Pourshahidi took the spot and put the ball home with ease for a 3-0 lead in the 50th minute
  • The UCI defense took the stage through the remaining 40 minutes as the offense added just one more shot on the day while Sac State put up a fight with six shots of their own, but none on frame as UCI finished out the shutout victory

  • The Anteaters are on a six-match unbeaten run lifting their overall record to 7-3-5, and they remain unbeaten in Big West play now 2-0-4 on 10 points
  • The opening goal was the first goal and point in the career of freshman Cristian Gallo also going down as the game-winning goal
  • Smuck's goal was his third of his freshman season and now has six points
  • Pourshahidi kept UCI perfect on penalties this year, 5-for-5, with two scored by Pourshahidi now with four on the season and nine points
    • Assists on the day came from Gutierrez and Treinen, the second for each, and a third this season for Marcus Lee tied for the most on the team
      • The Anteater active leaders in goals, assists, and points each added to their career totals with Pourshahidi now with 17 goals and 36 points and Treinen with 10 assists
  • Joe O'Shaughnessy in net saved the only shot on goal he faced to secure his sixth shutout and the team's seventh
  • The stat sheet favored Sac State with a late surge to lead in shots, 12-11, and corner kicks, 6-2. The 'Eaters put all three of their shots on goal into the back of the net while allowing just one
