SAN DIEGO – UC Irvine women's tennis won three of their five extra matches in singles at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships Friday in San Diego.
 
Yen Nhi Huynh dispatched Cal State Fullerton's Dana Kunza, 6-2, 6-1. Quin Brady earned her first victory as an Anteater in impressive fashion, coming back from a first-set loss to upend Arizona's Karissa Ghigiarelli, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 10-8. Carolyna Fowler also outlasted Emma Katarina Forgac of Hawai'i in three, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.
 
In the main draw, Haily Huynh fell in the Round of 64 to Grand Canyon's Isabella Crossman, 6-3, 6-3.
 
UCI's three doubles teams came up short in the first round of the main draw. Quin Brady/Amanda Perez dropped an 8-4 decision to the Rainbow Wahine's Makeilah Nepomuceno/Johannah Magenta Galindo. Maily Huynh and Yen Nhi Huynh lost to Ekua Youri/Emma Tutoveanu of UC Santa Barbara by an identical score, while Haily Huynh and Carolyna Fowler were dealt an 8-3 setback at the hands of LMU's Kim-Michaela Zharaj/Camilia Samel Druz.
 
Over in La Jolla, the 'Eaters had another strong showing at the Triton Invitational. Kara Chen and Sayuri Parandian started the morning with a hard-fought 7-6 (10) victory over their teammates, Bella Pitchford/Mackenzie Lukin. Chen/Parandian then cruised to a 6-1 win against CSUN's Isabella Chavarria/Annette Robertson, while Lukin/Pitchford took down the mixed pairing of Varsha Jawadi (UCSD) and Tallia Harper (CSUN), 6-1.
 
UC Irvine followed doubles play with two singles victories. Parandian made quick work of the Tritons' Jawadi, 6-1, 6-1. The Anteaters' remaining two matches went to a super tiebreak. Lukin outlasted the Matadors' Chavarria, 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. Chen won her first set but was unable to close it out, falling to CSUN's Harper, 1-6, 7-5, 10-4.
 
UCI is back in action at both the ITA Southwest Regional Championships and Triton Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 18.
