SAN DIEGO – UC Irvine women's tennis competed in the qualifying singles draw of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships Thursday at both San Diego State and the University of San Diego.
 
Amanda Perez won her first singles match of the day, defeating Chloe Vu of UC Riverside, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the second round of qualifying. Perez was unable to secure a spot in the main draw, falling to USD's Gabby Gregg, 6-0, 6-1.
 
Yen Nhi Huynh dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 decision to Kristina Nordikyan (USD). Carolyna Fowler came up just short in her first set against Alexandra Ozerets of Cal Poly, 7-5. Ozerets kept the momentum, closing out the match with a 6-0 victory in the second. Quin Brady and Maily Huynh both fell in straight sets to opponents from UC Santa Barbara.
 
Haily Huynh received a bye into the main draw where she is pitted against Isabella Crossman of Grand Canyon in tomorrow's Round of 64. The 'Eaters are also set to start play in the doubles main draw on Friday morning.
 
Over in La Jolla, UCI went 4-0 in singles and 3-1 in doubles at the Triton Invitational. Kara Chen defeated UC San Diego's Kamya Nair, 6-3, 6-4. Bella Pitchford also took down Isabella Chavarria of CSUN, 6-4, 6-2. Mackenzie Lukin added a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Matadors' Vitoria Solis Udriales. Sayuri Parandian was up 2-1 in the first set when Sofia Dermenjyan (CSUN) retired due to injury.
 
Lukin/Pitchford won both their doubles matches, upending Chavarria/Annette Robertson in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-1). They also made quick work of Dermenjyan/Tallia Harper, 6-1. Chen/Parandian picked up a 6-4 victory against a mixed pairing of Varsha Jawadi (UCSD) and Solis Udriales (CSUN).
