Serving Sparks No. 2 UC Irvine To Sweep Of No. 9 Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. – No. 2 UC Irvine recorded nine aces in a 3-0 victory over No. 9 Stanford (25-19, 25-20, 25-23) Friday night at Burnham Pavilion.

Four different Anteaters logged a point from the service line, led by freshman Micah Goss' career-high four aces.

Senior Hilir Henno led all players with 15 kills, hitting .500 (15-3-24). He also had two aces and a two block assists in the win.

The Anteaters improve to 6-0 while Stanford goes to 3-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Opposite Nolan Flexen added 13 kills and two aces
>Middle blocker Micah Goss hit .500 with five kills to go with his four aces
>Setter Joe Karlous totaled 31 set assists and a match-high nine digs
>Libero Shane Aitken tallied five digs
>Stanford was led by Moses Wagner's 13 kills, five digs and four block assists
>Both teams had five blocks, while UCI held a .282-.205 hitting advantage

FIRST SET
>UCI jumped out to a 8-2 lead in the strength of a 5-0 run capped by a Hilir Henno ace
>Kills by Micah Goss and Henno along with a Stanford attack wide forced a Stanford timeout, 16-9
>Stanford went on a 4-1 run to close within 16-21 before a Henno kill stopped the momentum
>UCI would go on to win 25-19 on a Stanford attack error

SECOND SET
>A kill by Nolan Flexen was followed by two Goss aces, 6-3
>A kill and ace by Flexen bookended a Cardinal error, 9-5
>A kill and two more aces by Goss upped the advantage to 16-11
>Stanford had three in a row, two kills and a block to creep to 15-16
>UCI responded with a Flexen kill and Stanford attack error to stretch the lead back out, 18-15
>A kill by William D'Arcy and a block by Maxim Grigoriev and Henno made it 20-16
>Flexen would swipe off the hands from a set by  Shane Aitken to cap a 3-0 run for set point
>Henno would crush a ball for the 25-20 victory

THIRD SET
>Stanford started with the early 3-1 lead before UCI peeled off six straight, including  a solo block from Joe Karlous, 7-3
> Stanford would score three in a row to inch to 9-10
>The Anteaters answered with a kill and ace by Flexen, 12-9
>UCI would hold a 21-17 advantage then Stanford rallied with four unanswered to tie the score at 21-21 all
>The teams would trade points until a kill by Flexen and a Stanford attack error ended the match 25-23
