Scoreless Draw Opens Big West Season at UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer battled for 90 minutes in Triton Soccer Stadium with UC San Diego to a 0-0 draw Thursday night in the opener for each side in Big West play.
  • It was a night for the goalkeepers stopping nine shots between them and halting all scoring
    • Ashley Naylor for the Anteaters made five saves to match her high as an Anteater
    • UCI and UC San Diego have finished in a draw for the third straight season and second straight without a goal
  • The Tritons beared down late with seven of the match's final eight shots including five in the final seven minutes to come away with the 12-10 advantage
    • UCSD had a pair of prime chances in the first three minutes firing one on frame and narrowly missing the far post on another
    • UCI was on the attack in the final minutes of the first half with Chloe Ragon trying to thread a pass across the goalmouth to a charging Anteater that was intercepted in the six-yard box
    • Laila El Behery was set up with the first chance of the second half missing high over the oncoming keeper in the 58th minute
    • UCSD fired a shot on goal in the 69th minute and then four near-misses in the final seven misses
    • Autumn Thompkins was in on goal for a breakaway with just under a minute remaining, but her touch was a little long and disrupted by the Triton keeper to keep things even
  • Both teams take home a point in their Big West openers, two of six programs that opened Big West play Thursday. The weekend will end with 10 of the 11 programs having one conference match in the books.
  • UC Irvine's next game will be Sunday, September 29 with a home match vs. CSUN to complete the 28-day absence from Anteater Stadium. It will also be Senior Day with a postmatch ceremony for the 13 'Eaters that will be graduating to be recognized.
