UC Irvine Falls to No. 21 San Diego, 1-0
September 13, 2024 | Men's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer hung with the No. 21 team in the nation Friday night in Anteaters Stadium just coming up short, 1-0, against the Toreros.
- It was already a 1-0 match on the second shot of the game as the Toreros converted a brilliant cross from the left wing that Oliver Rhoades volleyed at the back post just between 'Eater keeper Alex Shields and the post to put USD on top in the eighth minute
- The 'Eaters slowly brought the game back to them after a majority of the early possession went to the Toreros. The halftime shot advantage was 6-4 to USD, but a pair of solid efforts on target from Marcus Lee and Brady Treinen kept San Diego honest
- The second half began with both sides on the attack. Each keeper made a big save and the Toreros even cracked the crossbar in the 74th minute
- The 76th minute came a pivotal moment in the match as a foul in the box put the Anteaters in the spot. After a confirmation from a brief video review, Mario Anaya stepped up to the spot, but his attempt was saved by Luis Ludosan in goal and the rebound was hit high keeping in a 1-0 match in favor of San Diego
- The Anteaters kept the pressure and the possession down the final 15 minutes, but struggled to get any quality chances. Shields in goal made his best save of the match in the final minutes while USD also hit the crossbar once more, but in the end hung on for the 1-0 win to stay unbeaten on the year
- Shields finished with two saves in the contest as San Diego finished with the 13-9 shot disparity. UCI fired four shots on target. Luke Pruter as an injured non-participant was shown a red card on the bench and will miss the next match.
- UCI sits at 1-4-1 on the year now with a loss to begin their four-game homestand. Next up is a visit from Utah Tech on Saturday, September 21.
