LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball stumbled out of the gate Tuesday night in Page Stadium and could never recover in a midweek loss, 12-5, to USC.

- The Trojans erupted for a six-run bottom of the first scoring the first six hitters of the game. The tacked on three more in the second inning on two home runs to go up 9-2 early
- The hosts had built a 12-2 lead before the Anteaters got going again with a run in the seventh. The eighth saw two long home runs from Blake Penso, his first of the season, and James Castagnola, the first of his career, for solo shots to cut the score to 12-5
- Eight different 'Eaters collected the team's eight hits
- Woody Hadeen reached three times scoring twice
- Landon Gaz made his first career start walking twice and playing left field
- Six different Anteaters pitched on the night. David Butler made his collegiate debut closing things out with two scoreless innings allowing one baserunner and picking up his first career strikeout
- The loss drops UCI to 1-2 in midweek games along with 11-2 in games away from Anteater Ballpark. It also snapped a five-game winning streak against the Trojans
UCI is on to the weekend with a road series starting Friday, April 12 at 6:00 p.m. at UC San Diego.
Postgame Thoughts with coach Orloff
"Tough to win when you give up nine in the first inning-plus. We have to pitch better than that and not give up seven extra-base hits. First time we've had one of those in our first 30 games, it's part of it."
"
Blake Penso does everything right, he's everybody's favorite player, hasn't gotten a lot of opportunity in 3+ years here; comes in and hits a ball way over the center field fence and that was awesome and their should be more at-bats coming from him in certain situations.
James Castagnola same thing, been here for a year and a half and hasn't gotten many chances. Worked hard, played well when he's played. Butler making his debut 30 games into the season; on a night when we couldn't get zeroes he comes up with two of them."
