LA JOLLA, Calif. --- A heartbreaking, roller coaster of a ballgame Sunday in Triton Ballpark finished with UC Irvine on the losing side, 10-9, to UC San Diego.
- The action packed ninth-inning began with the 'Eaters trailing 8-5 and UCSD closer Izaak Martinez on the mound working on his third inning of the game
- A hit batsman and walk set the tone for UCI which was followed by Woody Hadeen sneaking a double inside the third baseline to score both and make it an 8-7 deficit
- After a Jo Oyama bunt single, the 'Eaters got sacrifice flies from Caden Kendle to tie the game and Myles Smith to put UCI on top, 9-8
- The bottom of the inning saw Ricky Tibbett and the defense get two outs with UCSD putting a runner on second. A long fly ball took Caden Kendle to the center field wall as he made the catch, but could not complete it as the ball fell out with the impact of the center field fence to allow UCSD to tie the game, 9-9
- With the winning run 90 feet away, the Tritons got another towering pop-up that was taken by the wind and the defense was unable to haul it in allowing UCSD to win, 10-9
- The 'Eaters had held leads of 2-0 after the top of the first and 3-2 midway through the fourth in the game, but UC San Diego responded each time with runs in the bottom half of their innings
- Another key play in the game came in the fourth. After a leadoff single, the Tritons hit a tailor-made double play ball that went under the glove of the Anteater defense helping ignite the Triton rally as they went on to score five runs and take a 7-3 lead
- The offense fought hard and played to the final out Sunday. Myles Smith led the charge with four RBIs including a home run as part of his two extra-base hits
- Thomas McCaffrey added a two-run home run of his own to take the team lead with six
- Woody Hadeen again was impactful reaching four times including three hits, two RBIs, two runs, and a steal
- Anteater pitching went through some hard luck especially Ricky Tibbett who drew the loss from the two runs allowed in his 2.1 innings of work.
- Nick Rincover threw his most in an Anteater uniform of two innings shutting out UCSD and all on 14 pitches
The devastating loss means UCI drops its first weekend series of the 2024 season. Now at 25-7 overall, the 'Eaters maintain a slim lead in the Big West at 11-4. Next up is a home matchup Wednesday with USC and 6:00 p.m. first pitch before a three-game non-conference series with San Diego State with Friday and Sunday played in Anteater Ballpark.
