No. 19 UC Irvine Wins Doubleheader Game One, 32-2

FRESNO, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball left no doubt in the first game of their Friday doubleheader at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium defeating neutral site-opponent Columbia, 32-2.
  • UC Irvine's offense enjoyed their largest offensive output of the year and broke a UCI record set just last year with their 32 runs on just 20 hits
  • The bats got things started with four runs in the first inning highlighted by a two-out, two-run double from Chase Call
  • Columbia responded with singles runs in the first and second innings to close the gap to 4-2
  • Jo Oyama belted a solo home run in the third inning to quick-start a three-run frame to lead 7-2
  • The big inning came in the fourth with nine runs by the Anteaters to take a 16-2 lead
    • Jo Oyama doubled home two runs with no outs in the inning and came up later with two outs and singled home another RBI
    • Abraham Garcia-Pacheco also had a two-run single
  • The 'Eaters added two more in the fifth thanks to RBIs by Caden Kendle and Anthony Martinez
  • Chase Call hit a three-run double in the seventh inning to give UCI the 21-2 advantage
  • UCI added an 11-run ninth inning highlighted by Oyama's three-run triple and Call's two-run home run
  • Anteater starting pitcher Tim Grack did not stick around long enough for the decision allowing two Lion runs with five strikeouts in four innings
  • The bullpen tossed five shutout innings between David Vizciano, Michael Pirrello, and Elliot Joslin allowing three baserunners and striking out seven
  • Pirrello earned the victory, the first of his career, with the first five strikeouts of his career
  • Anteater firsts came in the contest including James Castagnola and Landon Gaz. Castagnola scored three times and had an RBI single. Gaz scored twice with a walk and hit by pitch. Frankie Carney also recorded his first career RBI
  • Anteaters putting up record performances including Oyama who hit for the cycle on his ninth-inning triple. It's the fourth in program history and first since Troy Ybarra did so in 1981. Oyama finished 5-for-7 and drove in nine RBIs to set a new UC Irvine record topping the eight done in a game not since 1983 and done previously by Mike Rupp and Jeff Malinoff. Chase Call did drive in eight runs which tied the old record and becomes just the fourth Anteater with eight in a game.
  • The 'Eaters improve to 12-0 extended their best-ever start to a season, and their win streak dating back to 2023 extends to 18 in a row.

UCI plays game two of their Friday doubleheader starting at 6:05 p.m. against the hosts Fresno State.
