IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine women's cross country makes the trek to Colfax, Washington, for the 2024 NCAA West Regional on Friday, Nov. 15. The women's 6K race is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start at the Colfax Golf Club.
Representing the Anteaters at the regional meet will be Makena Castillo, Nicole Contreras, Malia Gay, Cynthia Herrera, Daisy Penney, Kaia Schmidt, Maggie Sczupak and Anna Vogtmann.
BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
Senior Anna Vogtmann broke her own school record and claimed runner-up honors at the Big West Cross Country Championships in Riverside on Saturday, Nov. 2. Vogtmann, who has led UC Irvine in all three of her races this season, clocked in at 19:49.3, just under two seconds behind individual champion Schuyler Gooley of Cal Poly (19:47.7). Vogtmann improved her own school record that was set on the same course in 2022 by three seconds. Her second-place conference showing was the Anteaters' best since 2008.
Vogtmann was one of eight 'Eaters to run a lifetime best on the Big West Championship course. Sophomore Kaia Schmidt and senior Maggie Sczupak both established personal records to place among the top-20. Schmidt was 17th in 20:46.2, while Sczupak was 19th in 20:48.2. Senior Malia Gay crossed the finish line in a PR 21:04.6, and freshman Cynthia Herrera was the team's fifth scorer as she notched the best 6K time of her young collegiate career at 21:06.0 (32nd). As a team, UCI placed third overall (96 points).
REGIONAL RANKINGS
UC Irvine moved up one spot to No. 12 in the latest USTFCCCA West Region Rankings released on Nov. 4. The Anteaters have been featured in all six polls this season. They came in at No. 11 on Sept. 30 and Oct. 7, which was the program's highest ranking in the current regional system that dates back to 2009.
TWICE AS NICE
Senior Anna Vogtmann earned her second career All-Big West honor with her runner-up showing at the conference meet. As a sophomore, she also took fifth at the Big West Championships. The Folsom, California, native broke the school record in both of those outings. This year, Vogtmann was twice named the Big West Athlete of the Week. On Oct. 15, she earned her second weekly award for her performance at the Bill Dellinger Invitational. Running in an elite field of 154 athletes, she clocked in at 20:51.6 to take 30th. Vogtmann was also recognized after her season debut at the UC Riverside Invitational (Sept. 21), where she covered the 6K course in 19:58.2 to place third out of 223.
IN THE TOP-10
Four current Anteaters rank among the top-10 in 6K program history. Anna Vogtmann (19:49.3) and Sameen Andar (19:57.6) own the top-two spots with their personal records that were established on the UC Riverside Agricultural Operations Course. Makena Castillo (20:42.6) and Kaia Schmidt (20:46.2) also entered the mix this year at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively.
