Zayd Mahmoud Nets First Career Weekly Honor

IRVINE, Calif. – Goalkeeper Zayd Mahmoud was awarded Big West Player of the Week honors on Wednesday afternoon the conference announced.
This is the first career weekly honor for the junior and third of the season for the Anteater program.
Mahmoud was a vital part of the Anteater defense in two contests against top 10 nationally ranked teams over the weekend.
Against No. 6/6 California, Mahmoud recorded a season high 11 saves and tallied an assist in the 13-5 victory. It is the Anteaters first win over the Golden Bears since September 29, 2012, when UCI won 13-11 and the first home victory over Cal since October 2, 2010 (W, 9-8). The defensive efforts from the goalkeeper allowed Cal to find the back of the cage five times, their lowest offensive outing of the season, and fewest in the series between the two teams since the October 7, 2000, meeting in Berkeley where the Anteaters won, 5-4.
In the contest versus No. 3/3 Stanford, the goalkeeper saw 16 minutes of action where he stopped eight shots out of the 17 put on frame for an efficient 47.1 save percentage, the highest of any goalkeeper in the contest.
The junior leads UCI in goals against average (10.46) and ranks eighth in the Big West in total saves (35).
Mahmoud and the Anteaters head to the Gary Troyer Invitational for four games this weekend, the first against No. 20 Air Force on Friday Oct. 4 at 12:20 p.m.
