October 19, 2024 | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer scores a second straight shutout win Saturday night at Matador Soccer Field topping CSUN, 1-0.
Coach Raz and the 'Eaters were on it from the jump. CSUN put up three shots in the opening minutes, but UCI answered back with a goal on their very first shot. Mario Anaya played a ball outside to Brady Treinen who whipped a cross to the goalmouth that Misael Gonzalez got a toe on nudging the cross around CSUN's keeper for a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.
UC Irvine controlled most of the half after that point including the final seven shots and possession at nearly 60%. The scoresheet also showed five of the six corners in UC Irvine's favor as it went into the locker room at halftime ahead, 1-0.
CSUN looked to flip the script in the second half on the attack for the equalizer. The Matadors had all five corners in the period, finished with 10 more fouls than the Anteaters, and put up 10 shots in the half to overtake the shot total in the match, 13-12, but could not get anything past Paul Jing.
Gonzalez knocks home his second goal of the season and his career and his first game-winner. Treinen and Anaya collected assists; third this season for Treinen, second-most on the club, and six in his career, while Anaya has two to give him seven as an Anteater.
With three Big West matches remaining, UC Irvine shifts focus to Cal Poly on Wednesday, October 23, traveling up to San Luis Obispo for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against the Mustangs two points ahead of them in the standings
