No. 7 UC Irvine Edged By No. 5 UCLA in Five

Box Score IRVINE, Calif. –No. 7 UC Irvine came back from two sets down but would fall in five to No. 5 UCLA at the Bren Events Center in front of a crowd of 2,644 Wednesday.

The Anteaters (5-2) dropped the first two sets 18-25, 15-25 before taking the next two 25-23 and 25-21. UCLA would hit .579 without committing a hitting error in the final frame (11-0-19) to win the match 15-9. The loss snaps UCI's a five-match winning streak.

UC Irvine out-blocked the Bruins 14.0-8.5 led by Connor Campbells's match-high seven block assists.

UCI tied its season-low in aces with four and watched UCLA (7-2) rack up seven winners from the service line.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Outside hitter Hilir Henno led UCI with 15 kills and two aces
>Opposite Maxim Grigoriev had a career-best 11 kills to go with five block assists
>Middle blocker Conner Dahm had a career-high eight kills, hitting .583 (8-1-12). He also posted three block assists
>Setter Brett Sheward totaled 38 set assists, six digs and five blocks assists
>Outside hitter Akhil Tangutur was a spark off the bench recording three kills a season-high four digs and four block assists
>Libero Cole Power had a team-high nine digs
>UCLA's Cooper Robinson had match and career-high 22 kills
>UCLA out-hit UCI .321-.226 and out-dug the Anteaters 42-32

FIRST SET
>An ace by Merrick McHenry dropped in the back corner to give UCLA a 3-1 lead
>A kill by Nolan Flexen and a triple block by Flexen, Connor Campbell and Brett Sheward tied the set at 4-4
>Back-to-back Bruin kills moved UCLA out to a 9-6 advantage
>A 5-1 run extended the Bruin lead to 15-9 and that was all the separation UCLA needed as they would go on to take the set 25-18

SECOND SET
>Once again UCLA started with a 3-1 lead
>Consecutive kills by Flexen tied it at 3-3
>A 10-2 run by UCLA broke open the set and gave the Bruins 14-6 advantage
>Henno would record a pair of kills before UCLA won the set 25-15
>The Anteaters hit -.037 (6-7-27)

THIRD SET
>A kill by Hilir Henno and a block by Sheward and Campbell tied the set at 5-5
>Two more Henno kills kept it even, 7-7
>UCLA out-scored UCI 4-1, including two aces to move out to a 14-10 lead
>UCLA would lead 19-14 before UCI would rally on kills by Maxim Grigoriev and Henno, an ace by Sheward and a Bruin attack error, 18-19
>Henno would serve a laser beam that was passed back over the net then Henno softly placed back on the Bruin side from the back row, 20-20
>A block by Ahkil Tangutur and Campbell was followed by two more Bruin attack errors moving the Anteaters in front 24-22
>Following a UCI attack error, a triple block by Tangutur, Campbell and Sheward gave the Anteaters the come-from behind victory, 25-23

FOURTH SET
>A kill by Conner Dahm, setting and attack errors by UCLA and a block by Grigoriev, Campbell and Tangutur help UCI out to a 4-1 lead
>Another block this time by Campbell and Sheward forced a UCLA timeout, 6-2
>Three in a a row by UCI on kills from Grigoriev and Tangutur and aUCLA attack error pushed the Anteaters margin to 14-8
>UCLA would rally on three of their own to pull within 11-14
>A 4-1 spurt by UCLA, three on UCI errors, closed the UCI lead to 20-18
>Grigoriev recorded his fourth kill of the set to get UCI to set point, 25-21
>A UCLA kill delayed the set winner, a kill by Henno, 25-21
>UCI hit .520 (16-3-25) led by four kills each by Henno, Grigoriev and Dahm

FIFTH SET
>A pair of aces by Henno started the set followed by a pair of UCLA kills, 2-2
>UCLA would score three in a row to force a UCI timeout, 5-3
>Consecutive kills by Cooper Robinson helped UCLA to a 8-5 lead
>UCLA would score five of the final six points for the 15-9 victory

NOTES
>UCLA has won the last seven meetings between the schools
>UCI is 1-2 in five sets this season
