Extra Time Not Enough For UCI In Loss To Long Beach State

LOS ANGELES – The Anteaters dropped 13-12 to No. 11/10 Long Beach State in a sudden death overtime thriller on Friday afternoon.
 
Junior Ethan Shipman took the offensive charge behind his team high four goals on 11 shots.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Shipman's four goals are the most for the attacker this season
  • Samuel Otta and Gage Verdegaal each notched hat-tricks in the contest
  • This was both Otta's and Verdegaal's fifth multi-goal game of the season
  • Thomas Cass and Tyler Padua both contributed a goal
  • Jacob Pyle made 14 saves in the contest, playing all 39:26 minutes in the cage
  • Pyle's 14 denials tie his season high that was first set versus California Baptist on Sept. 2nd
  • Stewart Campbell led the match with his three assists while leading the team with two steals
  • Johann Thrall was also a team leader in assists dishing out two
  • Otta has extended his scoring streak to eight games
  • This was only the ninth overtime game played between the Anteaters and the Beach and only the second to reach sudden death

SCORING BREAKDOWN
  • First period: No. 11/10 Long Beach State got the first goal of the game before Verdegaal responded with two of his own. The Beach put one in the net in the final minute of the quarter to knot the score 2-2.

  • Second period: UC Irvine went on a three-goal scoring run before No. 11/10 Long Beach State added two more to bring the game within one. Shipman used the power play opportunity to help keep the Anteaters lead, 6-4, into the half.

  • Third period: The Anteaters fired off quickly to score at 7:26, capitalizing on the one-man advantage. LBSU then went on a three-goal run to tie the game at 7-7 each. Otta scored the final two goals of the period for UCI to reclaim the advantage, 9-8.

  • Fourth period: UCI scored twice within the period, but the Beach would have an answer each time, forcing extra time with a 10-10 split.

  • Sixth/OT period: No. 11/10 Long Beach State split the deadlock with their goal 34 seconds into the period. In crunch time, UCI regained possession off the penalty shot rebound to deposit the ball into the cage as time expired leaving the game tied, 11-11.

  • Seventh/SD period: The Beach scored the game winner at 1:34.

UCI is set to face Whittier at 8 a.m. on Saturday September 23rd at the Spieker Aquatic Center on the campus of UCLA. The Anteaters will play one more game at either 2 p.m. or 3:30 p.m.
