IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine women's basketball has signed Shirel Nahum to a National Letter of Intent head coach Tamara Inoue announced Tuesday afternoon.
"We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Shirel to our family," Inoue said. "She brings international experience playing for Israel in multiple FIBA events. Shirel's passion for the game will contribute to the upward direction we are headed as a program."
Nahum, a 5-foot-9 guard, was recently named to the Israeli Senior National Team that will play in the 2023 FIBA Women's EuroBasket this summer. They are set to host their Group Phase games in Tel Aviv against Belgium, Italy and the Czech Republic, June 15-18.
Nahum was also a member of the U18 and U16 Israeli Youth National Teams. Last year, she was part of the squad that competed in the FIBA U18 Women's European Championship in Greece. She played in all seven games, averaging 10.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals. Nahum shot 50.8% (31-61) from the field and went 4-of-10 from beyond the arc.
In 2021, Nahum was on the U16 squad that traveled to Slovakia for the FIBA Women's European Challengers. Over the team's five games, Nahum averaged 7.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.2 steals.
Nahum was also a member of the Israel Basketball Academy - Wingate Academy. She was named the Outstanding Player for the 2022-23 season in the Premier League (Girls A) after averaging 15.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.8 steals per game.
