UCI Earns Win Over CUI On Senior Night

IRVINE, Calif. – The Anteaters brought home the win on senior day, defeating Concordia University Irvine 16-5 on Wednesday evening.
 
Zachary Baxter, Jake Liechty, Dylan Patist, Archer Sauer, Garrett Selby, and Whittaker Worland were honored after the game for their contributions to the program.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Junior Archer Sauer and redshirt sophomore Samuel Otta led the Anteater scoring behind their hat-tricks, both going perfect 3-3 at the cage
  • Junior Dylan Patist recorded two goals in the contest
  • Eight other Anteaters each posted a goal
  • UCI shot at a strong 0.727 clip (16-22) and converted on five of their seven power play chances
  • Junior Garrett Selby played the entire game in the goal, notching a career best 17 steals for his fourth double-figure save performance of the season
  • The last time an Anteater goalkeeper recorded 17 saves in a game was Matej Matijevic twice in 2017 and Alex Kazmier in 2012, fourth best in program records since 2008
  • Johann Thrall had a game best three assists while four other players dished out two
  • Ethan Shipman stole the ball twice in the contest
 
SCORING BREAKDOWN
  • First period: It was all Anteaters early as they scored six straight in the opening period of the game. Two UCI goals were converted off power plays.
  • Second period: Thrall won the sprint for UCI and quickly found Luka Krstic for the put in at 7:50. Concordia University Irvine put one on the board before Samuel Otta went on a run of his own for a hat-trick. UCI added one more for the 11-1 advantage at the half.
  • Third period: CUI played tremendous defense to limit the Anteaters to two goals that included Whittaker Worland's first career goal. The Golden Eagles added another tally to their column to end the period, 13-2.
  • Fourth period: Each side saw three goals scored in the final stanza. CUI opened and closed the scoring, but Sauer deposited his third goal into the cage as UCI won, 16-5.
