IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's basketball team showed their composure and resiliency Monday night, overcoming a late three-point deficit in a 71-63 win over Eastern Washington at the Bren Events Center.
Â
The Anteaters (2-2) were out front the entire game until an 8-0 run by the Eagles gave them their first lead of the night at 61-58 with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Â
Nevaeh Parkinson answered with back-to-back layups to reclaim the advantage before
Nevaeh Dean knocked down a clutch three to make it a four-point cushion with 36 seconds on the clock. UCI continued to lock down defensively and got it done at the free throw line to hand Eastern Washington (3-1) its first loss of the young season.
Â
"Defensively we never quit," said head coach
Tamara Inoue. "We were a little discombobulated because they run a fast offense and get quick shots, but I thought we stuck with it and got those rebounds when we needed it. We fought through it and didn't get rattled. I'm really proud of our team for fighting through until the end and being able to finish."
Â

HOW IT HAPPENED: Dean scored the first four points of the game to lift UC Irvine to an early 8-0 lead. Eastern Washington got on the board at the 6:40 mark and proceeded to close the gap to one. Â
The 'Eaters kept the momentum to start the second period with buckets from Parkinson and Nahum putting them on top, 22-10, with 8:33 remaining. After EWU cut the deficit to five, a 10-2 run that was bookended by threes from Nahum and Tom, gave the home team a 32-19 edge at the 4:07 mark. Eastern Washington brought it back within single digits (34-27) at the break.
Â
The two teams traded points over the first three minutes of the third frame. The Eagles then scored five unanswered to make it 38-36 with 4:51 to go. Parkinson responded with the next three points and UC Irvine turned that into a 10-2 spurt to pull ahead, 48-38.
