November 11, 2023 | Women's Basketball
IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's basketball team put together a complete team effort on both sides of the ball to run away with a 74-43 victory over Seattle U in their home opener Saturday at the Bren Events Center.
The Anteaters (1-1) were locked in defensively from the start, allowing just 12 first-half points. They went up by 10 after the opening period before putting the game well out of reach by scoring 21 and 25 in the second and third quarters, respectively. UCI never trailed and led by as many as 40 midway through the fourth frame.
"I thought we were patient and moved the ball well," head coach Tamara Inoue said. "Offensively we worked it around and got good shots. Then on defense, everyone was playing their part and we did a really good job of communicating. I am proud of them today for sticking with it the whole time."
BY THE NUMBERS: Eight different 'Eaters scored and three finished in double figures. Seniors Diaba Konate (7-8 FG) and Nevaeh Parkinson (8-11 FG) tied for the team lead with 17 points each. It was a career high for Parkinson who also had a team-best seven rebounds and three blocks. Konate added four boards, five assists and three steals.
Junior Déja Lee was the third Anteater in double figures with 13 points to go along with five assists. Freshman Shirel Nahum contributed a season-best nine points.

Seattle U (0-2) shot 28% overall and was just 2-of-16 from deep. Mya Moore paced the Redhawks with a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED: UC Irvine got the scoring started with a Konate layup at the 8:04 mark. Seattle U then tied it up before a 3-pointer from Lee put the Anteaters on top for good. After the Redhawks made it a one-point game, UCI took control with a 10-1 run to close the first quarter with a 15-5 lead. Nahum sparked the rally with six points during that stretch.
The 'Eaters kept their foot on the gas in the second period, outscoring Seattle U, 21-7. Parkinson (10) and Konate (9) combined for 19 of UC Irvine's points to increase its margin to 24 (36-12) at the break.
In the first half, the Anteaters held the Redhawks to 3-of-22 shooting and 0-for-8 from long distance.
