BULLDOG INVITATIONAL
Fifth-ranked UCI opens the 2023 campaign at the Bulldog Invitational on Saturday January 21st at the Aquatics Center on the campus of Fresno State in Fresno.
The Anteaters take on No. 4 California first at 11:30 a.m. and then will face the host team No. 8 Fresno State for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
TOURNAMENT STORYLINES
>UCI enters the season ranked fifth in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) national poll following the conclusion of the first regular season week. The Anteaters finished the 2022 also ranked fifth
>The 'Eaters are 4-22 all time against No. 4 California, splitting their two matches in the 2022 season.
>UC Irvine first met the Golden Bears at the Arizona State Cross Conference Challenge where the Anteaters fell 16-8 before defeating Cal in Berkley by one point in overtime (14-13)
>No. 4 California finished the 2022 season with a 17-6 overall record and advanced to the semi-final round of the NCAA tournament
>UCI looks to stay unbeaten against No. 8 Fresno State as the 'Eaters hold the 3-0 all-time record
>The Anteaters also faced the Bulldogs at the ASU Cross Conference Challenge last January, downing Fresno St. 10-6 in the first day of action
>No. 8 Fresno State completed the 2022 campaign with a 19-8 overall record and a perfect 7-0 in conference play to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament
>Hawai'i and Michigan round out the tournament field
>The Anteaters finished 22-7 and 5-1 in the Big West last year, won the Big West tournament crown and played in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament
>Following this weekend's action in Fresno, UCI will head over to Riverside for California Baptist's two-day Lancer Invitational
