IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's water polo team kicks off the 2022 campaign at the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego Sept. 3-4.

Twelfth-ranked UCI opens the 2022 campaign at the Triton Invitational Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 3-4) at the Canyonview Aquatics Center and Triton Pool on the campus of UC San Diego in La Jolla.

The Anteaters take on Redlands on Saturday at 10:40 a.m. and then face an opponent that will be later announced at 3 p.m. UCI will play two games on Sunday that will be determined based on Saturday's results.

TOURNAMENT STORYLINES

UCI enters the season ranked twelfth in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) national poll for the 2022 preseason.
The 'Eaters are 14-0 all-time against the Bulldogs and defeated Redlands 21-2 at last year's UCI Irvine Mini Tournament.
Redlands finished last season with a 5-23 overall record, 2-12 in the SCIAC.
UCI's group also includes Concordia and Southern California.
The Triton Invitational field includes fellow GCC teams Long Beach, Pepperdine, and UC Santa Barbara.
UCI last competed in the Triton Invitational, where they beat UC San Diego and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps while dropping games to Long Beach and California (Berkley).
The Anteaters were 8-13 last season, competing in the quarterfinals with UC Santa Barbara.
Following this weekend's action in La Jolla, UCI will host UCLA on Saturday Sept. 10 and 2 p.m.

UC Irvine was picked to finish sixth overall in the Golden Coast Conference
The Anteaters return 19 players from the 2021 season. Sophomore standout Tyler Padua takes a spot in the returning lineup in the center position. As a freshman, Padua was named to the All-GCC Freshman team as well as earning GCC Player of the Week honors the week of Nov. 11.
Zlatan Nikocevic and Grant Chiponis return for their senior season in 2022. Both Chiponis and Nikocevic will lead the charge of this of a young squad.
Klatt adds seven newcomers to the 2022 roster. The incoming class includes two sophomores (Ethan Shipman, Jack Stevens) and five freshmen (Jackson Matos, Luka Krstic, John Billington, Jasper Dale, and Owen Younger).
This 2022 team is comprised of two senior, three juniors, 15 sophomores, and six freshmen.
Head Coach Dan Klatt enters his 1st season at the helm of the men's program.
