July 14, 2022 | Women's Water Polo
IRVINE, Calif. –Recently graduated women's water polo player Tara Prentice is one of eight Big West Conference student-athletes that have been nominated for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year award.
Established in 1991, the award recognizes female student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in their community, in athletics and in academics throughout their college careers.
As 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the NCAA Woman of the Year program is an important opportunity to honor and reflect on the impact of women on intercollegiate sports.
This year's nominees represent all three NCAA divisions, including 248 from Division I. Of the 577 nominations, 23 sports are represented.
Prentice, a four-time All-American, has been named UCI/Big West Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year twice as well as recognized with the 2020 UCI Chancellor Award of Distinction. The 2022 Big West Player of the Year earned undergraduate degrees in political science and criminology, law, and society and leaves UCI with master's in Innovation and Entrepreneurship as well as Demographic and Social Analysis. She ended her career as UCI's and the Big West's all-time leader in goals with 242, tying the UCI single season goal record with 74 in 2022. Prentice, who was also nominated in 2020, is fresh off winning a gold medal at the FINA World Championships with the United States National Team.
Conferences will now select up to two nominees from the institutional pool and forward them to the Woman of the Year selection committee. The selection committee will choose the top 10 honorees in each division. From those 30 honorees, the selection committee then determines the three finalists in each division for a total of nine finalists.
For the first time in the award's history, the Top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the Woman of the Year will be named at the NCAA Convention. The 2023 Convention will take place in January in San Antonio.
