EUGENE, Ore. -
Junior Josh Farmer is in eighth place after the first five events of the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field.

Farmer, who is making his second-straight NCAA appearance, racked up 4,084 points on Wednesday, bettering his Day 1 score from a year ago by 118 points. He saw improved marks in the 100m, long jump, shot put and 400m.

Farmer got out to a strong start in the 100m where he was fourth overall with a time of 10.71 seconds. He followed that performance with another impressive showing in the long jump as his leap of 7.18m (23-06.75) on his second attempt stood as the 10th-best of the competition.

In the shot put, the San Diego native opened with a toss of 13.51m (44-4), before topping that effort on his next throw at 13.83m (45-4.5). That was his second best mark of the season and was good for a ninth-place finish.

After clearing 1.86m (6-1.25) in the high jump, Farmer closed out the day with a sixth-place performance in the 400m (48.10).

Farmer will be back in action tomorrow for the final day of the decathlon. He is set to compete in the 110m hurdles (11:30 a.m.), discus (12:20 p.m.), pole vault (1:30 p.m.), javelin (4 p.m.) and 1500m (7:56 p.m.).
