Prentice Career-High Propels No. 6 UCI To Win Over No. 4 CAL, 14-13 OT

BERKELEY, Calif. – Senior Tara Prentice tied the school record with seven goals to lead No. 6 UC Irvine to a 14-13 win over No. 4 Cal in overtime.

Prentice scored her seven goals on eight attempts and tied Erica Horman (4-27-02) for most goals in a game in UCI history. She moved into second all-time in UCI career scoring with 222 and is two shy of tying Jessy Cardey's school record of 224 set from 2010-14.

UCI led 12-9 with 3:29 to go in the game only to watch Cal score three unanswered to force overtime, 12-12. Prentice would score the lone goal in the first extra period then when the Golden Bears answered in the second overtime she delivered with the game-winner with 1:30 left.    

UCI wins its fourth straight and improves to 16-5 overall. Cal falls to 15-3.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Elena Flynn, Isabel Rack and Jessica Lynch each added two goals in the win
>Piper Smith totaled a goal and matches Kili Skibby for the most assists with three
>Goalkeeper Faith Tedesco had seven saves and a steal
>Cal was led by Cecily Turner, Shea Salvino and Emma Wright with three goals apiece
>Cal goalkeeper Isabel Williams had nine saves and four steals

FIRST PERIOD
>At 5:58, Cal got on the board first  
>UCI returned favor at 5:26 with a skip shot by Tara Prentice
>Cal turned the ball over on the next possession and suffered another exclusion. Prentice promptly fired another skip shot into the cage at 4:52, 2-1
>The Golden Bears took advantage of a penalty shot at 4:25 to tie it at 2-2
>A pass by Elena Flynn was lobbed into Prentice in front of the cage (1:49) then a skip shot goal by the Golden Bears knotted the score at 3-3 (1:30)
SECOND
>Flynn put one in from the left side on a pass from Piper Smith
>The Anteaters increased the lead to 5-3 with another goal on the left side by Isabel Rack at 3:35 assisted by Kili Skibby
>The Golden Bears would score at 2:30 to close to 5-4
>Each team turned the ball over and when Airian Grisham found Prentice in front of the cage she got her the ball and Prentice buried it at  2:06, 6-4
>Cal would score with one second before the break, 6-5
THIRD PERIOD
>Cal would tie the game before Lynch put away a pair of goals (6:23 & 5:16), 8-6
>Sabina Shackelford fed Rack up top for a goal at 3:19, 9-6
>Cal had a powerplay goal to stay close, 9-7
>With 50 seconds left, UCI passed the ball around until Prentice fired a shot high on the left side, 10-7
>Cal answered with a goal with 17 ticks left on the clock, 10-8

FOURTH PERIOD
>UCI had two players excluded including keeper Faith Tedesco and the defense blocked the first attempt but found a crack to score narrow the Anteater lead to 10-9 at 5:42
>Shot by Smith bounced off the bar and trickled into the cage, 11-9 (5:09)
>With a man up, Tedesco stopped a shot and UCI capitalized with a goal by Flynn at 3:29, 12-9
>Cal would rally scoring the final three goals of the period, the last a powerplay at 1:34 to force overtime, 12-12

FIRST OT
>Tedesco would block not only the first attempt but a rebound before Prentice had a backhand to take the lead, 13-12 (1:04)
>UCI's defense was key as the Anteaters came up with a field block to end the period without giving up a goal

SECOND OT
>Cal used an exclusion to tie it again at 13-13
>The Anteaters answered with a pass from Smith to center that was tapped in by Prentice, 14-13 (1:30)
>A Golden Bear bad pass gave UCI an opportunity but Cal defense came up with a block with 20 seconds remaining
>Cal called timeout with 16 seconds left and out of the break the final shot skidded off the crossbar as time ran out  

NOTES
>This is UCI's fourth win against the Golden Bears in 24 meeting, but the Anteaters have won three of the last five meetings
>This is the third time this season, UCI has upended a higher ranked opponent and second time they have taken down No. 4 (Arizona State)
>Prentice increased her team leading goal total to 53
