Women's Water Polo Wins Twice at Home

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine opened its home season with a pair of wins Saturday topping Azusa Pacific and Concordia at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

Win vs. Azusa Pacific 19-7
The 'Eaters (4-2) could not have a better start in their first match Saturday with a 5-0 lead after one quarter including a goal at the buzzer by Ariana Bockstahler.

UCI put up the match's first six goals and did not allow a goal to Azusa Pacific (1-3) for the first 10 minutes. UC Irvine kept the things rolling taking a 9-1 lead into the half. The second half was more of the same with two more five-goal periods to finish out a 19-7 victory for the 'Eaters.

Brooke Banta led the scoring netting four goals on four shots. Thirteen different Anteaters put up a goal including two-goal games by Nioka Thomas, Tara Prentice, and Mica Schiavone. Libby Alexander topped the Anteaters with four assists and three steals. Faith Tedesco made three saves in the opening period without allowing a goal. Jordan Frost stopped five shots in the remaining periods.

Win vs. Concordia 23-5
Game two had an equally great start for UCI with a nine-goal first period. The defense stepped up shutting out Concordia (1-3) in the second period to head into the half up, 15-2.

The second half completed a 23-goal day for the Anteaters to tie the program record for goals in a match. Leading goal scorers were Sarah Nichols and Nioka Thomas with three each. Kennedy East and Tara Prentice each had four-point days with two goals and two assists each. Other leaders were Kili Skibby with three assists, Mica Schiavone with three exclusions drawn, and Sarah Nichols with three steals. Faith Tedesco stopped three shots and allowed four goals in three periods.
