Anteater Olympians: Weekend Recap

The Anteater contingent got off to a good start in the opening weekend of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Here's a look at the action that has taken place.

MEN'S INDOOR VOLLEYBALL (USA - David Smith/Brian Thornton - Coach) vs FRANCE (Kevin Tillie)
The tournament started with an Anteater match-up featuring U.S. David Smith and France's Kevin Tillie. The U.S. won 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-22).  David Smith had seven kills, a block and a dig, while Tillie logged two kills and 1 dig.

The teams are both now 1-1 after the U.S. dropped a 3-1 result to ROC and France swept Tunsia 3-0. Smith added five kills and a block in the loss.

USA WOMEN'S BEACH VOLLEYBALL (Coach Jordan Cheng)
In their Olympic debut, the U.S. beach volleyball team of Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil who are coached by former UCI men's volleyball assistant coach Jordan Cheng rallied for a 2-1 win (21-13, 16-21, 15-11) over Latvia's Tina Graudina/Anastasija Kravcenoka

The duo trailed 9-11 in the third set and rattled off six consecutive points for the victory.

WOMEN'S INDOOR VOLLEYBALL (USA - Michelle Bartsch-Hackley)
The U.S. Women's Volleyball Team swept Argentina, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20, to open group play in Pool B on July 25. Outside hitter Michelle Bartsch-Hackley, a former UCI men's volleyball assistant coach, started all three sets and finished second on the squad with 13 points (11 kills, 2 aces).
 
WOMEN'S WATER POLO (Dan Klatt – Assistant Coach; Melissa Seidemann, Kaleigh Gilchrist, Alys Williams, Jamie Neushul)
Team USA went 2-0 in group play over the weekend. On July 23, Team USA defeated Japan, 25-4. Former UCI assistants Kaleigh Gilchrist and Melissa Seidemann scored two and one goals, respectively.  

On July 25, Team USA coached by Dan Klatt defeated China, 12-7. Seidemann, Gilchrist and Alys Williams each scored once in the win. 

MEN'S WATER POLO (Croatia - Lovre Milos / South Africa - Jason Evezard)
Croatia opened Olympic group play with a 23-7 victory over Kazakhstan on July 25. Lovre Milos came off the bench to score one goal in 19 minutes played.

South Africa also kicked off Olympic group play on July 25, falling to Italy. Jason Evezard started and played 24 minutes in the opener.

MEN'S SWIMMING (Dave Durden – Head Coach)
After the first weekend in Tokyo, the U.S. men's swimming team has collected four medals (2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze).  

Chase Kalisz earned Team USA's first Gold medal, touching first in the 400 meter IM with a time of 4:09.32. Teammate Jay Litherland earned the Silver medal finishing with a time of 4:10.28. 

Kieran Smith earned a Bronze medal in the 400 meter freestyle with a time of 3:43.94.  

The men's 4x100 meter freestyle relay team took home a Gold medal on the second night. Caleb Dressel, Blake Pieroni, Bowe Becker and Zach Apple touched first with a time of 3:08.97. 

BADMINTON (Phillip and Ryan Chew)
Former students Phillip and Ryan Chew began their U.S. Olympic group play against China falling in straight sets, 2-0. After falling 21-9 in the opening set, the Chews returned in set two making it competitive, 21-17. Next, the duo lost to Japan, 2-0, eliminating them from advancing to the knockout rounds. The brothers lost their sets 21-11 and 21-3. Final group play match July 27 against Germany.
