Anteater Olympians: Bringing Home The Bling
July 15, 2021 | Olympics
UCI student-athletes have been medalists 24 times over the previous 12 Summer Olympic Games. Six have been gold, 16 silver and two bronze.
Four of those athletes have also won a NCAA title as an Anteater.
David Smith, who will be competing in his third Olympic Games, was a member of UCI's first men's volleyball national championship team in 2007 then took home a bronze medal with the United State in 2016.
Men's water polo brothers Peter and Jeff Campbell were both members of the 1982 National Championship team. After helping UCI to an undefeated season (30-0), they earned silver medals at the 1988 Seoul Games. Peter, who was the co-MVP of the 1982 NCCA Tournament, also captured silver in 1984. Jeff was named NCAA National Player of the Year in 1985 and selected the Most Valuable Player of the 1983 and 1985 NCAA Tournaments.
Men's water polo player Chris Duplanty was a three-time Olympian, including winning a silver medal in 1988 while still a student at UCI. A year later, he was the starting goalkeeper on UCI's NCAA Championship team in 1989.
On the water, two former UCI sailors have also won medals and national championships. Jay Glaser (1972) and Nick Scandone (1988) each won a Co-ed Dinghy Championship as an Anteater. Glaser earned a silver in Tornados in 1984, while Scandone was a gold medalist in the SKUD-18 class at the Paralympic Games in 2012. Sailing is not an official NCAA sport, but governed by the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA).
