UCI in Eighth After First Round of Big West Championships

LA QUINTA, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team is in eighth place after the first round of the Big West Championships Sunday at La Quinta Country Club.
The Anteaters combined for a 5-count-4 team score of 311. Long Beach State leads the field at 1-under 287, sitting nine strokes ahead of Cal Poly and UC Davis, who are tied for second. The Aggies' Lucas Carper had the best round of the day, holding a one-stroke lead at 2-under 70.
Graduate student Jonathan Kang was UCI's top performer on the first day of the conference tournament, carding a 3-over 75 to tie for 15th. He made the turn at even par, but had three bogeys over the final six holes.
Freshman Henry Fitzhugh is tied for 30th (78), while junior Nathan Irwin and freshman Darien Zhao both finished with a 79 to tie for 36th. Irwin had his third eagle of the season on the par-5, 527-yard sixth hole. Matt Gunson rounded out the 'Eater lineup in 39th.
Irwin, Fitzhugh and Zhao are making their Big West Championships debut.
UC Irvine will look to move up the leaderboard in the second round tomorrow with tee times starting at 11:20 a.m.
