IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team will make its way to La Quinta Country Club for the 2021 Big West Championships, May 2-4. Eighteen holes will be contested each day with tee times starting at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday and Monday, and 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Anteaters are seeded sixth and will play with No. 4 CSUN and No. 5 Cal State Fullerton in the first round. They are slated to hit the links Sunday at 11:20 a.m. UCI's 5-count-4 lineup includes Jonathan Kang, Nathan Irwin, Darien Zhao, Henry Fitzhugh and Matt Gunson.
BIG WEST NOTABLES
The 'Eaters lead all active league members with eight Big West team titles. Most recently, they hoisted the trophy in 2018, when as the seventh seed, they edged No. 1 UC Davis by one stroke. UCI has also produced four individual conference champions - John Chin (2010, 2008), Mike Lavery (2003) and Ryan Armstrong (2002). In addition, the Anteaters have made 14 NCAA Division I Regional appearances, and advanced to the NCAA Championships on three occasions (2008, 2001, 1992).
CHAMPIONSHIP REWIND
With the 2020 Big West Championships canceled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference tournament was last held in 2019 when UC Irvine finished eight strokes behind Cal State Fullerton to claim runner-up honors. The Anteaters have two returners from that squad and both placed among the top-10 with Jonathan Kang coming in eighth and Matt Gunson taking 10th. Kang also led the 'Eaters to the 2018 team title with a fifth-place individual finish.
LAST TIME OUT
UC Irvine was last in action at the Western Intercollegiate, April 12-14. The Anteaters finished 11th in a field that featured six programs ranked among Golfstat.com's top-75. Jonathan Kang was UCI's top finisher, tying for 40th with a 54-hole score of 219 (72-72-75).
