Zhao Leads 'Eaters After Two Rounds in La Quinta

LA QUINTA, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team moved up one spot on the leaderboard following the second round of the Big West Championships Monday at La Quinta Country Club.
The Anteaters saw a 20-stroke improvement from day one, combining for a team score of 291. They are currently seventh with a 36-hole total of 602.
Long Beach State (570) stayed out front with a 10-stroke advantage over second-place UC Davis. The Aggies' Lucas Carper also maintained his lead on the individual field with a 7-under 137 (70-67).
Freshman Darien Zhao had UCI's best round of the tournament, and of the season, at 4-under 68. Zhao finished the afternoon with four birdies and his first collegiate eagle. He made the turn at 2-under, and after only his second bogey, he eagled the par-5, 543-yard 11th hole. Zhao jumped 20 spots in the standings to lead the 'Eaters in a tie for 16th (147).
Junior Nathan Irwin also climbed 12 spots with a second-round 72 (E). Irwin had a strong start as he got to 3-under following his second eagle of the tournament (11th hole), and fourth of the season, before closing out the round at even par. Irwin is now tied for 24th (151).
Freshman Henry Fitzhugh saw a four-stroke improvement with a 2-over 74, while graduate student Jonathan Kang registered a second-round 77. The two are tied for 28th with a 36-hole score of 152. Matt Gunson is also tied for 41st.
