DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's cross country team completed the 8,000-meter Big West Championship course at Wildhorse Golf Club Friday morning.
The 'Eaters finished eighth with 192 points. UC Santa Barbara claimed the conference team title, while Cal State Fullerton's Sam Ayala was the individual champion.
"With a young men's squad, we have a lot we can learn from this race," said UCI distance coach Casey Kear. "We had really strong races from Lukas Amare and Cameron Smith, but weren't able to get the team result we were looking for. We have a good, young core and are moving in the right direction, but still have a ton to work on. We get another chance to compete against these teams in two weeks and hope we can improve our performance."
Eight of UCI's nine student-athletes were competing in their first Big West cross country meet. Second-year freshmen Lukas Amare and Cameron Smith led the way with top-40 performances. Amare came in 25th with an 8K personal-record 24:52.3. It was his second race as the Anteaters' No. 1 finisher. Smith also shaved 10 seconds off his personal best, clocking in at 25:05.3 to place 38th.
True freshman Joshua Schuld was the third 'Eater to cross the finish line at 25:11.1 (42nd), while classmate Zeid Hussain followed at 25:48.1 (50th).
Junior Sebastian Bautista, who was running only his second race of the season, also took 52nd with a time of 26:08.1. Freshmen Juan Sanchez (26:09.4) and Henry McClish (26:12.8) rounded out the team's top-seven.
UC Irvine will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 12, when it heads to Sacramento for the NCAA West Regional.
