SACRAMENTO - The UC Irvine men's cross country team finished 25th at the NCAA West Regional Championships Friday at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.
"The men had their best race of the year collectively," said UCI distance coach Casey Kear. "This is a race that typically humbles younger teams, but we were able to beat two Big West schools that beat us a couple weeks ago. Josh had a great race for us, moving up over 60 spots throughout the race. Lukas and Zeid both moved up well too. We were able to build some real momentum heading into track season with these six freshmen."
The six first and second-year freshmen were making their NCAA Regional debuts. Joshua Schuld was the team's top runner for the third time this season, covering the 10,000-meter course in 32:04.4 to place 102nd overall. Lukas Amare wasn't far behind at 32:16.8 (110th).
Zeid Hussain was the third 'Eater to cross the finish line, clocking in at 32:25.0. He was followed by Cameron Smith (32:59.1), Juan Sanchez (33:18.4) and Henry McClish (33:26.3).
