IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's cross country team is back in action this week as it heads to the Inland Empire for the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14. The Women's 6K Invitational is the first race of the meet with a 7:30 a.m. start at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course.
STORYLINES
• This is the fourth year in a row the Anteaters are competing in the UC Riverside Invitational. They had a high finish of sixth last year.
• Hannah Chau led the way at the 2018 UCR Invite, placing 14th out of 170 runners.
• She made her way into the school record books with the program's eighth-fastest 6000m time at 20:59.2.
• Chau is one of eight returning letterwinners from last year's squad that took fifth at the Big West Championships.
• That was UCI's best showing since 2008.
• UC Irvine also brings in a talented group of seven newcomers for the 2019 season.
• The 'Eaters officially welcomed distance coach Casey Kear to their cross country/track & field staff on Aug. 14.
• Kear comes to Irvine from Long Beach State where he spent the previous two seasons.
LAST TIME OUT
• UCI finished seventh out of 21 teams at the season-opening Mark Covert Classic in Brea on Saturday, Aug. 31.
• Sophomore Hannah Chau anchored the Anteater effort as she was sixth among 199 overall runners and fourth among collegiate athletes.
• Chau completed the 5000-meter course at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in a personal-record 18:05.8.
• Freshman McKenna Paulson was UC Irvine's No. 2 runner, coming in 41st with a time of 19:26.3.
• Fellow freshmen Elizabeth Celada Padilla (19:31.6) and Claire Livengood (19:32.9) were 45th and 46th, respectively.
• Sophomore Patricia Sanchez (19:43.8), who did not compete in cross country last year, rounded out UCI's scorers.
• Senior Brenda Dorantes (19:44.1), freshman Cathy Salazar-Gasca (19:52.6) and freshman Cammie Martinez (19:53.9) weren't far behind.
