Anteaters Drop Season Opener To Oregon State

EUGENE, Oregon – UC Irvine started the 2019 season with a 3-0 loss to Oregon State in the first match of the Oregon Classic in the Matthew Knight Arena.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>UCI hit .093 (27-17-107) to OSU's .402 (46-9-92)
>Sophomore Abby Marjama led UCI with seven kills
>Senior Loryn Carter added six kills and two block assists
>Freshman Onye Ofoegbu made her presence know at the net with a team-best four block assists
>Along with Ofoegbu, UCI had two other newcomers in the starting lineup. Freshman Kelly Negron had a team-high 17 set assists and eight digs, while junior Chloe Owens topped the squad with 12 digs
>Oregon State was led by Chloe Brown with 12 kills and Cecilee Max-Brown with 10
>The Beavers held the 8.5-5.5 advantage in blocks
TURNING POINTS
First Set
>Oregon State jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead
>Freshman Onye Ofoegbu recorded her first kill and had a block assist with Cassie Staewrt to draw UCI to 5-4
>The Beavers would go on a 12-2 run to open a 17-6 lead and force an Anteater timeout
>The Anteaters would never recover losing 25-12, while hitting just .100.
SET 2
>UCI jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead behind three block assists and a kill by Ofoegbu
>The Beavers would creep to 10-9, but a OSU service error was followed by a kill by Kelly Negron and an ace by Laura Butler to create some breathing room, 13-9
>UCI would lead 17-13 on a Makayla Wolfe kill before the Beavers rallied and took a 19-18 lead with a 6-1 run
>UCI would close to 23-22, but Oregon State would score the final two points to claim the set, 25-22
SET 3
>UCI committed five errors as OSU began the set with a 9-1 lead
>A 10-2 spurt by the Beavers put the set out of reach 21-7
>An attack error would end the set, 25-11
