IOWA CITY, Iowa --- No. 19 UCI lost a heartbreaker Saturday afternoon at Duane Banks Field 1-0 to Iowa for just its second series loss of the season
Running Ragged
The Anteaters (28-13, 10-5) had the bats working early Saturday afternoon getting a pair of hits in the first inning from
Mike Peabody and
Adrian Damla only to strand them on fielder's choices. Again, UCI put a couple runners on base from a single and a walk, but
Griffin Mazur's liner found the left fielder to again leave runners on base. The 'Eaters found a way to load the bases all with two outs in the fourth inning and Peabody vying for his third hit of the afternoon was robbed on a diving play at first by Zeb Adreon beating him to the bag and keep the game scoreless while the Anteaters stranded seven of their 10 runners on the day on base in the first four innings
Scoring in the Sun
The Hawkeyes (29-16, 11-7) found the game's only run in the fifth inning on a stroke of fortune. A one-out flyball from Tanner Padgett took
Konnor Zickefoose to the track in right field where he had to fight the sun. Just an inning earlier, he made a great snag on a ball in the sun to prevent a hit in short right field. This time, the sun won bouncing for a double off the warning track and the Hawkeyes' first hit. After a pinch-runner and a wild pitch, Denholm fought back with a big strikeout, but a two-out line from Tanner Wetrich was slowed by Denholm's pitching hand enough for
Sam Ireland to try and acrobatic throw up the middle, but it wasn't in time putting Iowa on top 1-0 after five.
Denholm Dealing
The sophomore starter did everything he could to give the Anteaters a chance in his second Saturday start of the year. He didn't allow his first baserunner until a hit batsman in the fourth, and then had the no-hitter broken up by the sun in the fifth, altogether allowing just six hits without issuing a walk and striking out eight on the afternoon for his second-highest total of his career.
Final Score: Iowa 1, No. 19 UC Irvine 0
UCI outhit the Hawkeyes on the day, 7-6, led by two hits from Peabody. Damla also reached twice drawing the only Anteater walk. For the 'Eaters, its their first shutout of the season and first since May 1 of 2018 losing at home to UCLA. Six different Hawkeyes had their six hits including Wetrich's RBI single and Lorenzo Elion scoring their run as a pinch-runner.
Pitchers of Record
Denholm finishes with his second complete game of the season in a losing effort much like his teammate
Taylor Rashi who also threw a complete game in a 1-0 loss last season. Cam Baumann did enough to win as the Iowa starter scattering seven hits in five shutout innings with a walk and three strikeouts. Jason Foster held the 'Eaters after coming in with nobody out and runners on first and second. He and Grant Leonard mowed their way through the Anteater lineup in the final four innings allowing a single baserunner on an error
Next Up
UCI will look to rebound Sunday, May 5, finishing the series against Iowa with a 1:05 p.m. CT (11:05 a.m. PT) start. The 'Eaters have still yet to announce their starter for Sunday while Grant Judkins takes the mound for the Hawkeyes.
