SACRAMENTO - Senior Barbara Coward finished 15th in the discus on the second day of the NCAA West Preliminaries Friday at Hornet Stadium.
Coward came up just short of qualifying for nationals as the top-12 advance to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, June 5-8.
Coward opened with a toss of 175-01, which put her in 10th place after the first round of the third and final flight. She fouled on her next attempt and ended up dropping five spots in the standings. Coward did not see an improvement on her last throw (171-07) as she came in 15th out of the top-48 competitors in the West Region. It was a career-best finish for the four-time NCAA West Prelim qualifier, and the best regional showing by an Anteater on the women's side since 2009.
"Barbara Coward has asserted her legacy in UC Irvine Track & Field history," head coach Jeff Perkins said. "She is arguably one of the best athletes I have witnessed come through our program in the last decade. She has proven herself as one of the most focused, driven and valued student-athletes we have ever seen. It will be Barbara we refer to as a prime example to our future student-athletes when it comes to success as shown in her work ethic and maturity over the years, and that has led to her as a three-time Big West Champion and multiple dean's list honoree. We are proud of Barbara and look forward to her future endeavors outside of UC Irvine."
Coward, who concludes a remarkable collegiate career, is set to graduate as the most decorated thrower in program history with three conference titles and three school records. Two weeks ago, she defended her Big West crown in the discus, making her the first 'Eater to win back-to-back titles in the event. She also went on to become UCI's first conference champion in the women's hammer.
The Atwater, Calif., native broke her own school record in the discus with a toss of 186-04 at the Triton Invitational on April 12. Entering this weekend, her mark ranked first in the Big West, ninth in the West Region and 13th in all of NCAA Division I.
In addition, Coward set UC Irvine's standard in the hammer throw twice in 2019, starting at the Beach Opener (March 2), where she won the event with a personal-best 196-02. She eventually topped that performance with a heave of 196-07 for another individual victory at the Steve Scott Invitational (April 26), which was her final home meet.
Back in February, Coward also became the program leader in the indoor weight throw (58-04.75).
