IRVINE, Calif. --- For the third time this season, sophomore
Trenton Denholm went the distance getting late production from the offense to work a 5-2 win Saturday night over UC Davis in Anteater Ballpark
All Aggies Early
UC Davis (19-28, 9-14) led the charge early knocking Anteater starter
Trenton Denholm around in the first two innings. A bloop double from Cooper Morrison started things off with a two-out single through the left side by Alejandro Lara getting him home for the 1-0 Aggie lead after one. The Aggies added to it in the second from a Garret Kelly bloop single brought home on a double splitting the outfielders from Jalen Smith making it 2-0 Aggies.
The Anteaters (33-16, 14-6) struggled with the bat stranding runners early including the bases loaded in the third and two more in the fourth along with a first inning double play to stunt the Anteater scoring
Big Inning
UCI found its rhythm in the fifth with one-out hit from
Jake Palmer and, providing a bunt single,
Christian Koss.
Brandon Lewis walked to load the bases setting up
Adrian Damla who busted a single through the right side to tie things up, 2-2. Lewis went first-to-third on the play coming in clutch as he was able to score on
Mike Peabody's fielder's choice giving UCI a three-run inning at the lead after five.
Denhom Derby
Trenton Denholm settled in after the first couple of innings retiring the next 14 hitters he faced and faced one over the minimum down the final seven innings. One of his victims was his brother, UC Davis catcher Logan Denholm, The two squared off three times with Trenton striking him out swinging twice and the third time with a short flyout to right field. All-time, Trenton has held his brother to 0-for-5 with two strikeouts, retiring him on a comebacker, and Logan reaching on an error once.
Final Score: UC Irvine 5, UC Davis 2
Jake Palmer hit the cover off the ball once again going 3-for-5 out of the leadoff spot with a double and run scored.
Christian Koss scored twice while going 2-for-4. Damla drove in two runs for the second straight night, and Zickefoose joined him as he and
Griffin Mazur had two-hit nights. Five different UC Davis hitters accounted for their five hits with two going for doubles
Pitchers of Record
