IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's track & field team is set to compete in the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival (March 29) and Jim Bush Legends Invitational (March 30) at UCLA's Drake Stadium this weekend.
 
On Friday, the hammer throwers (6:30 p.m.) and distance runners will be under the lights, starting with the 5000m at 5:55 p.m. The rest of the squad will be in action on Saturday, beginning with the javelin at 10:30 a.m. The track events then get underway with the 4x100 relay at 2:35 p.m.

STORYLINES
• Junior Brennan Doyle was named the Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week on March 26.
• Sophomore Seth Enochs is unbeaten in the long jump in two meets this season.
• Two weeks ago, he established a lifetime-best 24-07, which ranks fifth in school history.
• It also puts him second in the Big West, sixth in the West Region and 16th in the nation this year.
• Redshirt freshman Kyle Tsu has already made his way into UCI's all-time top-10 in the shot put at 55-08.25 (No. 7).
• The Anteaters have a good mix of experience and youth with 15 returners and 10 newcomers.
• They welcome back four All-Big West performers in Asa Allen, Andres Woodruff, Paul Resong and Kyle Sandoval.
• The 'Eaters remain in Southern California for all of their regular-season meets.
• The only time UCI travels outside of the region is for NCAA postseason competition.
• The NCAA West Prelims are in Sacramento, while the NCAA Championships will take place in Austin, Texas.
 
LAST TIME OUT
• UC Irvine had eight top-five finishes, including two event wins, at the UC Riverside Spring Track Classic.
• Seth Enochs picked up his second individual victory in as many meets, winning the long jump at 24-04.5.
• Brennan Doyle claimed the 400m title in a personal-record 47.76.
• Senior Paul Resong also notched a season-best 48.64 to come in third.
• Kyle Tsu was the runner-up in the shot put, going for a season-best 55-08.25.
• Senior Omar Valenzuela was third in the discus with a season-best 159-02.
• Junior Andres Woodruff had another strong performance in the 400m hurdles, clocking in at 53.95 (3rd).
• Junior Sam Ayala led the Anteaters in the 800m with a fourth-place showing and a personal-record 1:54.00.
 
BIG WEST ACCOLADES
• Junior transfer Brennan Doyle received his first career Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week honor on March 26.
• It was also the first weekly award won by an Anteater on the men's side since 2017.
• The Burbank, Calif., native was recognized for his performance at the UC Riverside Spring Track Classic (March 23).
• He picked up a victory in the 400m with a personal-record 47.76, and added a season-best 22.16 in the 200m.
• Doyle's 400m time puts him second in the Big West and 31st in the NCAA West Region this year.
• In his season debut, he was the runner-up at the UCI Spring Collegiate Classic (48.45).
• Doyle is also a member of UC Irvine's 4x400 relay, helping the quartet to a season-best 3:14.89.
 
NEW ERA
• Seth Enochs earned his second-straight long jump victory of the season, and fifth of his career, last weekend.
• He defended his titles at the UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic and the UCR Spring Track Classic.
• On his home track, Enochs established a PR 24-07 to take over sole possession of fifth in program history.
• It was the best jump by an Anteater since Bob Rust reached 25-01 in 1984.
• Enochs, who is 20 years old, was born after each of the other top-10 marks were established.
• He is the first 'Eater to enter UC Irvine's long jump records in 26 years.
• The Yucca Valley, Calif., also won the long jump at UC Riverside with a mark of 24-04.5.
 
PATIENCE PAYS OFF
• Kyle Tsu, who sat out the 2018 campaign with an injury, made his long-awaited collegiate debut at the Beach Opener.
• On a rainy Saturday in Long Beach, he claimed runner-up honors in the shot put with a toss of 51-00.25.
• Just two weeks later, he went for a then season-best 55-02.75 to crack UCI's all-time top-10, coming in at No. 8.
• He has since moved up one spot to seventh in program history with a mark of 55-08.25.
• The Huntington Beach native also owns a season-best 166-07 in the discus.
• Through four meets, Tsu has finished no lower than sixth in the shot put and ninth in the discus.
 
MID-DISTANCE TRIFECTA
• Sam Ayala has notched three personal records in three races this year.
• His PRs in the 800m, 1500m and 3000m are also the Anteaters' top times of the season.
• Last weekend, Ayala registered an 800m lifetime-best 1:54.00 in a fourth-place finish at UC Riverside.
• He made his 2019 debut in the 3000m at the Beach Opener where he took third in 8:32.69.
• The Norwalk, Calif., native also came in third in the 1500m at the UCI Spring Collegiate Classic (3:51.33).
 
UP NEXT
• UC Irvine travels to Santa Barbara for the annual Big West Challenge on Friday, April 5.
• The meet will be held at UCSB's Pauley Track Facility, which is also the site of the 2019 Big West Championships.
