UC Irvine Comes Up Short At UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Irvine was edged by UC Riverside 3-2 at the Student Recreation Center Tuesday.
The Highlanders (6-17, 2-10) owned the net with an 8-2 advantage to take the match 11-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21, 15-8).
UCI falls to 1-18 overall and 1-9 in the Big West.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>UCI was led by middle blocker Makayla Wolfe with a season-high 14 kills, hitting .478 (14-3-23)
>Joy Umeh tied her career-high with 10 kills, matched by Loryn Carter who also had 10 kills
>Cassie Stewart and Onye Ofoegbu pitched in eight kills each with Ofoegbu recording two block assists
>Amarachi Osuji and Ayla Fresenius paced UC Riverside with 14 kills apiece
TURNING POINTS
FIRST SET
>UC Riverside would record the first kill of the set, but UCI would score the next seven with the help of two kills by Onye Ofoegbu, one by Joy Umeh and four Highlander errors, 7-1
>The Anteaters would roll to a 25-11 victory
>UCI did not commit a hitting error with 15 kills on 22 swings
SECOND SET
>The Anteaters would open a quick 3-0 lead on kills by Umeh and Abby Marjama, but a pair of service aces by Amarachi Osuji got UCR back even 3-3
>Three straight points by the Highlanders forced a UCI timeout, 16-13
>Riverside would lead 20-16 before two kills by Makayla Wolfe and one by Marjama pulled UCI within 20-19 making UCR call timeout
>UC Riverside would answer with the next two points
>UCI once again would get close at 22-21, but the Highlanders would score the final three to take the set 25-21
>UCR would hit .448 (14-1-29). Makayla Wolfe would add five kills in the set
THIRD SET
>A 3-1 run by the Highlanders put UCR on top 8-4
>Down 13-10, UCI would rally on kills by Loryn Carter and Cassie Stewart closed the gap, 13-12
>A Highlander service error was followed by a pair of Loryn Carter kills to knot the score at 18-18
>Riverside responded with the next three points to regain the lead 21-18
>UCR would not relinquish the lead, recording the final four points and win 25-20
FOURTH SET|
>UCI started with a 3-1 lead and would hold a 9-6 advantage on a kill by Carter
>The Highlanders would score four unanswered to take a 10-9 lead
>The teams remained close until UCI used a kill by Ofoegbu and a miscommunication on a dig to take a 20-18 lead
>A kill by Umeh and a Highlander service error gave UCI set point 24-21
>A UCI service error and a Highlander attack error ended the set 25-20 forcing a fifth set
FIFTH SET
>UC Riverside out-scored UCI 7-1 to separate itself 8-3
>A kill by Wolfe and a setting error by UCR brought the Anteaters to 9-6
>UCR would close out the match on a 6-2 run to win 15-8

>Loryn Carter returned to the court after being sidelined with an injury
>Kelly Negron recorded a double-double with 48 set assists, 10 digs and an ace
>Libero Chloe Owens led UCI with 16 digs, the 12th time she has recorded double-figures
