Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Alex Croteau

Jaquez, 'Eaters Down Highlanders in 2OT

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer won a tight matchup, 1-0, in double overtime to open Big West play Thursday night in Anteater Stadium.

Tug of War
The two sides each had their respective halves of prominence. UC Irvine (2-9-0, 1-0-0) had 60% of first half possession and four shots on target. Despite this pressure, no goals were able to be converted. UC Riverside (2-8-1, 0-1-0) had a much better second half, but goalkeeper Maddie Newsom kept a clean sheet into the overtime periods, and both sides entered square on most of the stat sheet

Shining Moment
The overtime periods remained rather uneventful. There was strong tactical play by both sides. It made it difficult for either side to get good attempts. A back and forth game that seemed destined for a nil-nil draw, but UCI managed to get the best of UCR at the end with some great teamwork. Jessica Miclat and Scarlett Camberos got the ball moving and directed a few volleys that landed at Alex Jaquez who put a shot past the Highlander keeper, Annie Bailey, to end it in the 108th minute of double overtime.

Final Score: UC Irvine 1, UC Riverside 0
This was Alex Jaquez's second career goal, both now game-winners. Scarlett Camberos got her first career assist on the goal while Jessica Miclat upped her career points total to 17.

The clean sheet seems to be a winning ticket for the 'Eaters as both wins this year have come by the way of the clean sheet. This was the first for Maddie Newsom on the season along with her first win to give her 13 shutouts and 32 wins all-time. The 'Eaters also improved to 5-1 on ESPN3 over the last six years in regular season matches at Anteater Stadium.

Home Run
The Anteaters are back on the Anteater Stadium pitch Sunday, October 6, to host a UC Davis squad that was flattened, 4-0, by Cal State Fullerton in their conference opener. The match kicks off at 1:00 p.m. on what will be a Senior Day Celebration for the 'Eaters with a ceremony following the match.
