No. 2 UC Irvine Downs No. 9 Stanford With Team Effort

Box Score PALO ALTO, Calif. – Five Anteaters recorded double-figure kills to lift No. 2 UC Irvine to a 3-1 win over No. 9 Stanford (30-28, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23) at Maples Pavilion.

UCI avenged a loss on Thursday and improved to 6-1 overall and handed the Cardinal their first loss, 5-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Opposite Karl Apfelbach led UCI with a season-high 17 kills, hitting .405
>Middle blocker Austin Wilmot posted a career-high 11 kills and had a team-high five blocks
>Outside hitter Joel Schneidmiller added 13 kills and four aces, while outside hitter Aaron Koubi had 11
>Dante Chakravorti not only guided the Anteater offense to a .391 hitting percentage, but added two kills, 53 set assists, two aces and a solo block
>Libero David Parker had a season-high 17 digs in the win
>Jaelyn Jasper had a match-high 21 kills for Stanford

TURNING POINTS
FIRST SET

>The teams would remain close until a 3-1 run which included a Stanford attack error, a block by Scott Stadick and Karl Apfelbach and a Apfelbach kill to sneak ahead 17-15
>A kill and block assist by Schneidmiller pushed the advantage to 20-17 and forced a Cardinal timeout
>UCI could not maintain the lead as Stanford would knot the set at 22-22
>The Anteaters needed five set points until a kill by Apfelabch and an ace by Dante Chakravorti would win the set 30-28
>UCI out-blocked Stanford 5.5 to 1

SECOND SET
>Stanford used a 5-1 spurt to jump out to a 9-5 lead
>The Anteaters would edge within 12-11, but the Cardinal would score the next two to hold the 14-11 advantage
>UCI rallied on a Cardinal service error, a block by Stadick and Apfelbach and back-to-back kills by Schnedimiller and Stadick to take a 21-19 lead
>Following a Stadick kill, Schneidmiller would bang three consecutive aces to win the set 25-20
>Anteaters hit .545 (14-2-22)

THIRD SET
>Austin Wilmot started the set with three kills, 3-1
>A kill by Stadick put the Anteaters in front 13-11, but the lead was short-lived as Stanford would tie it at 14-14
>Good defense helped Stanford take an 18-15 lead
>UCI could get no closer than one as Stanford would take the set 25-23

FOURTH SET
>A Cardinal service error started a 3-0 run that was capped by another Schneidmiller ace, 8-4
>A pair of kills by Apfelbach and a Stanford error moved the advantage to 12-8
>UCI seemed to be rolling along 23-18 on a block by Chakravorti and Wilmot, but Stanford wouldn't go away quietly, scoring four straight to force a UCI timeout, 24-23
>Schneidmiller would end the match with a kill, 25-23
 
NOTES
>UCI's .391 hitting percentage is the second highest of the year
>Schneidmiller added four aces to improve his team-leading total to 17
>It's the first time this season UCI had five players in double-digit kills
>UCI topped the Cardinal for the second night at the net, holding a 9.5 to 6 block advantage
>UCI's six aces ties the season-high
