Anteaters Unable to Trip Up Undefeated Gaels
September 29, 2018 | Men's Soccer
MORAGA, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer collided with an undefeated, untied No. 10 Saint Mary's squad, but could not solve the Gaels shutout, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Saint Mary's Stadium.
The Gaels (11-0-0) got the scoring started early putting one in the back of the net in the 11th minute. Filippo Zattarin and Anders Engebretsen went the length of the field to set up Jake Rudel whose finish inside the box got by Greg Patenaude to make it 1-0, Saint Mary's.
That was all the Gaels would need, however their chances kept coming. Patenaude finished with five saves, and he along with SMC keeper Remi Prieur each needed to make three saves in the second frame.
The match had a very physical feel as the teams combined to commit 48 fouls, 27 to Saint Mary's and 21 for the Anteaters, in addition to the seven cards issued including Luis Leon, Ateno Ajeakwa, Christian Bond-Flasza, and Alvaro Quezada all guilty of infractions.
The loss drops UCI to a final non-conference record of 6-4-1 as it begins Big West action this week starting on the road at UC Riverside Wednesday before welcoming in Sacramento State on Saturday, Oct. 6, to Anteater Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
NOTES: The match is just the second of 2018 in which UCI has been held scoreless and first since the season-opening 0-0 draw at San Diego
