Flying Start Paces 3-0 Win over Brown

IRVINE, Calif. --- The Anteaters raced out to a pair of goals in the first nine minutes to take Sunday's match in Anteater Stadium, 3-0, over the Brown Bears.

The first chance of the game actually came from Brown (2-3-0) on a corner kick in the second minute. Toby Howell whipped a corner in finding Justin O'Brien whose perfect header landed perfectly at Greg Patenaude's feet to keep the match scoreless at the moment.

UC Irvine (5-2-1) found its offense quickly converting in the sixth minute. Alvaro Quezada made a run along the left wing, cutting back off the touchline before slotting a ball to Daniel Crisostomo who let the ball along to Ivan Canales who knocked the ball home for the 1-0 'Eater lead.

The offense used its next shot just two minutes, 22 seconds later to add to its lead. Canales was the facilitator finding and open Jose Ortiz who jetted down the right wing and laced a shot inside the far post to make it 2-0 Anteaters in the ninth minute.

The Anteaters would make more moves before the half with Quezada on the scene again. Axel Adler found space down the left wing cutting back off the touchline and put the ball into the mixer. The bounced to Alvaro Quezada who punch a shot ahead and through Brown keeper James Swomley to make it 3-0 Anteaters through one half of play.

The second half did not produce any goals, but each keeper was testing with two saves each for Patenaude and Bear substitute Max Gross as UCI finished out its second straight shutout victory, 3-0. Patenaude finished with four saves collecting his fifth shutout of the year.

The game-winner was credited to Ivan Canales, the sixth of his career, and he added an assist in the match giving him three of each this season and 18 of each over his career.

Jose Ortiz followed him with the match's second goal upping his team-leading total to five along with his 10 points.

Alvaro Quezada's goal gives him three this season eclipsing his freshman total, and he did so in the assist category as well as he matches Canales for second on the team in goals, assists, and points.

The 'Eaters improve to 5-2-1 on the year and now have four straight wins at home to finish out the home section of the non-conference slate. Next home is a three-game road trip starting off up north at San Francisco, Thursday, Sep. 20, for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.

NOTES: Jose Ortiz has scored a goal in five consecutive home matches and five of his last six overall...Alvaro Quezada has points in three straight matches (2 G, 2 A)...UCI remains unbeaten against the Ivy League (2-0-1)...UCI improves to 4-0-0 on the season when wearing their new white pinstripe uniforms...Canales added to his career point total with 54, one back of Pat Lee's 55 which ranks 10th in program history
