NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Junior Barbara Coward claimed the discus title to highlight the first day of the Big West Championships for the UC Irvine women's track & field team Friday in Northridge.

Coward was the favorite to win the event and lived up to the expectation as she finished ahead of the pack by 11 feet. Her top mark of 167-07 came on her second attempt, giving her a comfortable lead through four more rounds. Coward is the Anteaters' fourth Big West champion in the discus and first since Itos Aikhionbare in 2014. Sophomore Brianna Villanueva added four points with a fifth-place showing (144-09).

On the track, senior Persis William-Mensah, junior Hope Bushnell and freshman Mikayla Scott all qualified for Saturday's 100m and 200m finals. William-Mensah had the fastest time in the 100m prelims with a wind-aided personal-record 11.42 (+2.4). Bushnell also registered a wind-aided lifetime-best 11.72, while Scott crossed the finish line in 11.89 seconds.

In the 200m prelims, William-Mensah shaved six-hundredths of a second off her own school record to win Heat 3 at 23.82. Bushnell wasn't far behind with a mark of 24.06 (4th), and Scott claimed the third time qualifier with a season-best 24.49 (9th). Β

Senior Simone Buchanan was one of three time qualifiers in the 400m as she made the cut at 55.82 seconds.

Junior Julia Sambvani notched a personal-record 60.73 in the 400m hurdles to place second in her preliminary heat and put her straight through to the finals. Sambvani now ranks 10th in program history. Senior Tyra Jones also snagged the final qualifying spot at 63.12.

Jones and junior Mychal Robinson both advanced out of the 100m hurdle prelims. Jones was an automatic qualifier as she was the Heat 3 runner-up at 13.79, which marked her third-straight sub-14 second race. Robinson moved on with a wind-aided career-best 13.94. Sophomore Iyana Cooksey ran a season-best 14.57 to come in 16th overall.

Junior Adrienne Lee tied for 12th in the pole vault (11-07.75), and freshman Natalie Koppel was 12th in the long jump (18-03).

UC Irvine returns to Northridge on Saturday, May 12, for the second day of the Big West Championships. The Anteaters will have 18 athletes entered in tomorrow's individual event finals, while they are also set for the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. The track events will be televised live on FOX Prime Ticket starting at 2 p.m.
