IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's indoor track & field team will travel to Albuquerque, N.M., this weekend for the Don Kirby Invitational, Feb. 9-10.

DON KIRBY INVITE
The two-day meet hosted by the University of New Mexico will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The Anteaters are one of 42 teams in an elite field that features a handful of ranked programs including No. 3 Oregon, No. 12 Stanford, No. 25 Arizona State and No. 26 New Mexico. The 'Eaters have 20 individuals entered in 10 different events this weekend.

"The Don Kirby Invitational is a phenomenal meet and brings in some of the best teams in the country," UCI head coach Jeff Perkins said. "This is really where we can see what we stack up against in terms of national competition."

Action gets underway Friday with the weight throw at 3 p.m. (PT), while Saturday's full slate starts with the shot put at 8:30 a.m. (PT).

SETTING THE STANDARD
Senior Persis William-Mensah bettered her own 60-meter school record with a personal-best 7.34 (7.38 converted) at the season-opening Lumberjack Team Challenge on Jan. 19. It is the fourth year in a row the Costa Mesa native has set a new 60m standard at UC Irvine. Her previous best was 7.43, which she ran at the 2017 Don Kirby Invitational.

IN THE BOOKS
Nineteen current 'Eaters have combined to produce 23 marks that rank among the top-10 in UCI's indoor history, including 12 that have been established this year. In addition, seniors Persis William-Mensah (60m, 200m) and Simone Buchanan (400m) own the school record in their respective events.

BACK TO SEATTLE
In two weeks, the 'Eaters will make their second trip to the University of Washington for the MPSF Championships, Feb. 23-24. This marks the 16th-straight year the conference meet will be held at Dempsey Indoor.

β’ Senior Persis William-Mensah has placed among the top-three in every race she has run this year. She won the 60m at the Lumberjack Team Challenge, while finishing second in both the prelims and final at the UW Invitational. William-Mensah also took third in her 200m season debut in Seattle.

β’ William-Mensah ran a school-record 7.38 in her season-opening 60m victory, a mark that is tied for 37th in all of NCAA Division I this year.

β’ Junior Hope Bushnell continues to move up the Anteater charts as she now sits at No. 3 in both the 60m (7.65) and 200m (25.10).

β’ Freshman Mikayla Scott had an impressive showing at the UW Invitational where she cracked UCI's all-time top-five in both the 200m (5th, 25.28) and 400m (3rd, 57.04).

β’ Junior Elizabeth Akindele has etched her name in the UC Irvine record books in just her first collegiate indoor campaign. She took third in the shot put at the season opener (44-05.5) before improving on that mark by nearly three inches with a toss of 44-08.25 at the UW Invite. Akindele ranks third in school history.

β’ Sophomore Brianna Villanueva has also been on the rise with two lifetime bests in the weight throw this year. She is currently fourth among the Anteaters' all-time top-10 with a personal-record 49-03.5.

β’ The 'Eater duo of senior Tyra Jones and junior Mychal Robinson are off to a strong start in the 60m hurdles. Jones placed 11th overall with a personal-record 8.69 at the UW Invitational, bumping her up one spot to No. 3 in program history. Robinson also finished fourth at the Lumberjack Team Challenge while cracking UC Irvine's top-10 at 8.82 seconds.

β’ Junior Barbara Coward claimed bronze in the weight throw at the Lumberjack Team Challenge with a toss of 54-11.5, which was just under an inch short of her career-best 55-00.25 that ranks second in program history.
